Kings of the Road is a quiet and gentle road movie centred on male friendship. Two taciturn, withdrawn, lonely men meet by chance. Bruno Winter is a loner and travelling projector mechanic and Robert Lander is a runaway husband and child psychologist. Both men show the capacity for growth. Into this theme of male friendships are woven several other main themes: the fate of German cinema, the Americanisation of German life, the relationships between the generations and forms of communication. In a film with a minimum of dialogue, gestures become as important as speech. Wenders also continues his exploration of rock music as a form of communication. His ambivalence towards America, evident here, deepens in his next film, The American Friend
