Summary: Since his death at the early age of 44, John Muafangejo (1943-1987) has become one of Africa's best known artists. Born in Ovambo, on the Angolan side of the Namibian border, he was educated at St. Mary's Anglican Mission at Odibo, to which he returned as a teacher after studying at Rorke's Drift in Natal. An intense and sensitive person, he worked in various media, but excelled in linocuts, executed in stark contrasts of dark and light. His subject matter included scenes from everyday life, historical events, religious themes and contemporary politics. All his works were highly personal, reflecting his relationship with the world and with his God. This programme presents an introduction to his life and his art. It includes interviews with a number of people who knew and/or admired him, amongst them the critics Edward Lucie-Smith and Orde Levinson, as well as Rev. Petrus Hilukiluah, Rev. Ed Morrow and Rev. John Wheeler
