Author Ulrich Plenzdorf and director Heiner Carow winningly portray everyday life in East Berlin in a passionate, but star-crossed love story. Featuring the music of the East German cult rock band, The Pudhys, the film proved so popular that official media blackouts could not keep audiences away from this cult classic. Paul is unhappily married to a beautiful but ignorant woman who cheats on him. Paula, who has two children from different fathers, is in a relationship of convenience with a tire salesman. When Paula and Paul meet in a bar, they fall in love. Yet, Paul, who can never make up his mind, almost loses Paula, who blames herself when her child dies in an accident. Finally, Paul wins Paula back and their love becomes a legend in the neighborhood, intensified by a tragic twist. The most popular DEFA film ever, it is a film about longings, dreams and the pursuit of individual freedom

The debut film of Katrin Sass (Goodbye, Lenin!, 2003). After officials banned The Russians Are Coming, Heiner Carow decided to use footage from the banned film as flashbacks in a new film. A few years after its release, however, the director vehemently distanced himself from its conformity to the party line. Günter Walcher is an average, apolitical, working-class West German citizen caught in a moral conflict. He is offered a promotion to division head--on the condition that he finds a reason for Zacharias, the work council chairman and a communist, to get fired. Walcher thinks back on another situation where he was lead to do something he believed to be wrong: when he was a member of the Hilter Youth, he became responsible for someone's death

Having mostly experienced WWII as children and young adults, the filmmakers of DEFA's second generation made their first films in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The formative experiences of these directors included the end of the war, the founding of East Germany in 1949, the end of Stalinism, and the building of the Wall. Their films reflect on these historic and political changes. Members belonging to DEFA's second generation include Frank Beyer (Five cartridges, Naked among wolves), Heiner Carow (The legend of Paul and Paula), Gerhard Klein (Berlin - Schönhauser Corner), Joachim Kunert (The adventures of Werner Holt), Frank Vogel (Just don't think i'll cry) and Konrad Wolf (I was nineteen, Sun seekers), among others

The DEFA classics collection gathers East German feature films that were screened around the world during the Cold War. Some won awards and recognition at prestigious international festivals (Her third, dir. Egon Giinther; Stars, dir. Konrad Wolf) or were submitted for an Oscar for Best foreign language film (Jacob the liar, dir. Frank Beyer). Others became box office hits in their country of origin (Hot summer, dir. Joachim Hasler; The story of little mook, dir. Wolfgang Staudte) and cult films in West Berlin (The legend of Paul and Paula, dir. Heiner Carow). These movies have made a significant contribution to international film history and are at the core of what could be considered the canon of East German cinema
