Der 25jährige Ismael, in Frankreich als Sohn nordafrikanischer Immigranten geboren, verbringt mit seinem halbwüchsigen Bruder Mouloud einige Tage bei seinem Onkel in Marseille. Um nicht zu seinen Eltern in die Heimat abgeschoben zu werden, taucht der Junge unter. Ismael macht sich auf eine verzweifelte Suche. Nach einer familiären Tragödie, an der der 25jährige Ismael schuld zu haben glaubt, verbringt er mit seinem 14jährigen Bruder Mouloud einige Tage bei der Familie seines Onkels in Marseille. Die Eltern sind nach dem Unglück in ihre alte Heimat, in den Maghreb, zurückgekehrt. Mouloud soll ihnen von Staats wegen folgen, Ismael die Reise organisieren. Aber der 14jährige will nicht in die fremde Heimat. Mit Hilfe seines Cousins Rhida taucht er unter. Ismael weiß, wie rasch er unter den Einfluß des smarten Drogendealers Renard geraten kann und macht sich auf die verzweifelte Suche nach dem Jungen in der von vielen Nationalitäten bewohnten Stadt, in der der gewöhnliche Rassismus allgegenwärtig ist, aber auch das friedliche Nebeneinander unterschiedlicher Kulturen eine Chance hat. Der in Tunesien geborene, in Frankreich arbeitende Regisseur Karim Dridi beschreibt in seinem zweiten Spielfilm die Konflikte innerhalb einer Immigrantenfamilie zwischen dem Traditionsbewußtsein der älteren Generation und den Jüngeren, die sich als Franzosen fühlen. Für "Bye-Bye" erhielt er 1995 in Cannes den "Prix de la Jeunesse".
