A patent infringement suit which was eventually brought before a special master. Western Union alleged infringement of an agreement it had with American Bell Telephone. American Bell Telephone believed Western Union et al. had infringed their patents. At the time, Western Union and the other companies provided service to a number of telephone exchanges around the country. Their right to do so, and American Bell Telephone's obligations to them, were at dispute here
