These countries saw America had much to offer with its democratic system and multinational democracy. The Center formed a non-profit corporation with the University of Hawaiʻi and the State. It could receive federal money and had a multinational board. Here the East-West researchers work on the problems that affect Japan China, Hong Kong, Korea, Vietnam etc and focus on controversial issues and diplomacy

Bob Rees interviews Ed Carter, chairman of the U.S.S. Missouri Memorial Association and Retired Admiral Ronald Hayes. These two men were very instrumental in bringing the battleship to Hawaiʻi. The history of this important symbol of sea power, from its inception to the present day, is presented in this video. They give credit to Senator Daniel K. Inouye for helping to bring this wonderful ship to Hawaiʻi. It participated in several wars, was used for the signing of the Peace treaty of World War II, and most recently, it took part in cooling hot spots in the world. It is hoped that it will be a big drawing card for tourists here. Now there is a need to organize multiple volunteers and work parties to keep this valuable monument alive and well
