Search for X-ray induced decay of the 31-yr isomer of 178Hf using synchrotron radiation( )

Isomeric {sup 178}Hf (t{sub 1/2} = 31 yr, E{sub x} = 2.446 MeV, J{sup {pi}} = 16{sup +}) was bombarded by a white beam of x-rays from the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory. A search was made for x-ray induced decay of the isomer by detecting prompt and delayed {gamma} rays associated with the decay. No induced decay was observed. Upper limits for such a process for x-ray energies between 7-100 keV were set. The limits between 7 and 30 keV are below {approx} 3 x 10{sup -27} cm{sup 2}-keV for induced decay that bypasses the 4-s isomer and {approx} 5 x 10{sup -27} cm{sup 2}-keV for induced decay that is delayed through this isomer, orders of magnitude below values at which induced decay was reported previously. These limits are consistent with what is known about the properties of atomic nuclei

The 31-yr isomer of {sup 178}Hf at excitation energy 2.446 MeV, and with J{sup {pi}}, K= 16+, 16, has been the object of several studies for possible mechanisms that might trigger isomer decay to the ground state. Potential for the control of nuclear energies (MeV) with atomic energies (keV) is the driving interest. The 178Hf isomer is a favorite nucleus in the search for triggered decay because this isomer is long-lived, available in microgram quantities, the decay scheme is well known, the excitation energy is high, and a sample enriched in the isomer can be fabricated for irradiation. In fact, accelerated decay of the {sup 178}Hf isomer when irradiated with photons from a dental x-ray machine has been reported by Collins et al. The triggering x-ray energies were reported to be in the 20-60 keV range. Using the synchrotron radiation at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) we published limits on such accelerated emission approximately 5 orders of magnitude lower than those in ref. 1. Very recently, a new measurement of triggering has been reported by Collins et al., using monochromatic x rays from the SPring-8 synchrotron but this time for (several) much lower incident x-ray energies in the 9-13 keV region. In order to verify this observation, we undertook a new measurement at the APS, with significantly increased focus on incident x-rays below 20 keV, as described below

On the Electrodeposition and Characterization of Niobium from Fused Fluoride Electrolytes( Book )

The electrodeposition of niobium from a binary electrolyte consisting of KF and NaF was characterized and compared with the ternary electrolyte of LiF, NaF, and KF. The deposition experiments were conducted at current densities between 5 and 35 mA/cm to the 2nd power and electrolyte temperatures between 725 and 800 C. DTZ measurements indicated the melting points to be 450 and 710 C for the ternary and binary electrolytes with added K2NbF7; however, it was necessary to operate both electrolytes above 725 C to obtain dense coherent deposits. Coating morphology was described by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) morphology, while coating structure and properties were characterized by x-ray diffraction analysis. In particular, a series of diffraction measurements were reported to describe the changes in the microstructure of the deposited material as a function of the preparation conditions

A part of a program to develop erosion resistant coatings for advanced gun barrels, electrodeposition of tantalum and tantalum-chromium alloys from fused FLINAK (eutectic mixture of LiF-KF-NaF) has been investigated. Tantalum-chromium alloys containing 2-6% chromium were obtained by codepositing tantalum and chromium from an electrolyte containing 10 wt% TaF5(added as K2TaF7) and 0.5-1.5% Cr (added as CrF3), at 800 C and 15-40 ma/sq cm current density. The alloy coatings were smooth and columnar in structure. The microhardness of these coatings increased with the increase of chromium content

Effects of Ni doping on the structural properties and collapse of magnetic ordering in NdFe1−xNixO3 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.7) orthoferrites( )

Abstract: NdFe1− x Ni x O3 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.7) orthoferrites are synthesized by solid state reaction method, and the structural properties of these materials are investigated by employing x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The orthorhombic structure is observed in all systems; however, with the increase in Ni doping, the increase in tolerance factor and the decrease in the cell volume are observed. Orthorhombic distortion decreases with Ni content increasing up to 50%, while above 50% Ni doping it increases. SEM examination indicates the increases in grain size and intermixing of grains with increase in Ni concentration. Comparison between bulk and theoretical densities shows that in each of all samples porosity is less than 2%. Mössbauer spectroscopic investigations are performed to explain local structure, Fe oxidation states and collapse of the magnetic ordering. In these samples the Fe oxidation state remains +3 and there is no considerable increase in hole states observed; however due to mismatch of the ionic radii between Fe 3+ and Ni 3+, octahedral distortions, sagging and distribution of hyperfine parameters increase with increase in Ni concentration. The major factors behind the collapse of magnetic ordering in the Ni-doped systems are the weakening of the super-exchange interactions, decrease in the Neel temperature, increase in spin–spin relaxation frequency and high spin to low spin transition
