Effets indirects de la fourmi invasive Linepithema humile sur les chênes-lièges, à travers les ectomycorhizes by Sophie Le Hesran( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Ants, with termites and earthworms, are considered as ecosystems engineers, particularly as soil engineers. These organisms, by modifying the physical and chemical properties of soil, may have a direct or indirect impact on other organisms that inhabit it. The Argentine ant (Linepithema humile) is an invasive species which has been present in the Biological Reserve of Doñana (Spain, Andalusia) for 40 years. It principally occupies areas near to human settlements, but is also present in pine forests and under isolated cork oaks, from where it expels native ants. The cork oak population of Doñana has been declining over the last 20 years, and the exact reasons for this are unknown. This study investigates the potential indirect effects of Linepithema humile on the cork oaks of Doñana, particularly through the root system and its ectomycorrhizae. Different parameters between two cork oak groups were compared: 5 invaded and 5 uninvaded by the Argentine ant. Additionally, an experiment was conducted under laboratory conditions to study the structure of L. humile's nests. Our results show that L. humile has a great potential to impact the soil's properties as well as the organisms that inhabit it. It forms expansive colonies with intense activity between nests and may take advantage of the roots present in the soil to strengthen its nest structure. Although it is significantly more abundant than all the native species of Doñana, it seems that its nests don't modify the chemical properties of the soil. It doesn't seem to impact the abundance of the ectomycorrhizae associated to the roots either. However, it has a negative impact on ectomycorrhizae diversity, which is lower inside its nests
