"Kim Baker and John Jernigan capture Oklahoma's allure in 143 outstanding color photographs. The beautiful images are accompanied by an insightful foreword by Donald W. Reeves, the McCasland Chair of Cowboy Culture at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. Baker and Jernigan's travels have taken the two photographers from the swirls of activity in Oklahoma City and Tulsa to the charming towns that make up America's heartland. The images reveal a land of contrasts--wild prairies and thick forests, soaring mesas and mountain trails, sandy deserts and numerous lakes that inspires the imagination. Discovering the Voices of Multiethnic Literature Through Critical Reading and Discussion by Kim Baker( Book )

1 edition published in 2001 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although children often receive classroom opportunities to retell and summarize information, they must also learn how to critically examine what they read. Critical reading of multiethnic literature helps children develop understanding, respect, and value for the diverse cultures and people in the world. This paper discusses the value of integrating critical reading and discussion activities with multiethnic literature. The paper uses simulations of three critical literacy activities which were selected because they are effective for teaching critical thinking in intermediate and middle grades. The paper's first activity involves teaching students to ask their own questions about the social assumptions authors used when composing their texts, while the second activity, "Inquiry Charts," provides a visual display of information that is gathered from several sources, and the third activity, "Dialogic Thinking," is a discussion strategy that helps students understand different points of view about a topic. Includes a bibliography of 81 selected works of multiethnic literature. (Contains sample activity charts for 4 activities.) (Nka)

Provocative and Powerful Children's Literature Developing Teacher Knowledge and Acceptance of Ethnic and Cultural Diversity by Kim Baker( Book )

1 edition published in 2000 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A study examined personal written responses of novice white teachers to address methods, patterns, and implications of teachers' responses to powerful and provocative multicultural children's literature. Ten children's books were read orally and 150 responses from 15 graduate students in an elementary education course were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Results indicated that: (1) the most emotionally powerful books were those pertaining to the Holocaust, drugs and their proliferation, and paternal neglect and abuse; (2) teachers reacted negatively to descriptive words, language and writing style of the most socially provocative books; (3) all teachers would use the books about gender in their classrooms; (4) books about war would be used, but not those with graphic details of the sadness of human experience; and (5) teachers were unexpectedly cautious in revealing personal reactions to the books. Findings suggest that an education course to develop teachers' sensitivity to diversity is a good beginning of awareness, but changing white, middle-class teachers' values and attitudes must take many varied and sustained approaches. Adapting the model for information literacy and cultural heritage in Cape Town: investigating user attitudes and preceptions in libraries, museums and archives by Kim Baker( )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Adapting the Model for Information Literacy and Cultural Heritage in Cape Town: investigating user attitudes and perceptions in libraries, museums and archives, by Kim Baker, investigates the attitudes and perceptions of general public adult users of the City of Cape Town public libraries, Iziko Museums of South Africa, and the Western Cape Archives and Records Service in Cape Town towards cultural heritage, information literacy and learning in order to adapt the Model for Information Literacy and Cultural Heritage for Lifelong Learning to the Cape Town context. A generic Model for international use was developed for the book. In formation Literacy and Cultural Heritage: Developing a model for lifelong learning . (Baker, 2013). The adapt at ion of the generic model is a necessary preliminary step before designing courses to teach information literacy and cultural heritage to the general public in a given local context and in an integrated manner, with public libraries, museums and archives collaborating and co - operating to provide the training together. The investigation was conducted by means of survey questionnaires, which applied within-method triangulation of quantitative and qualitative questions, and a combination of Yes/No answers, Likert scale questions and multiple-choice questions. The survey questionnaires included the demographic categories of race, gender, age group, home language, level of education, religion and employment status in order to gain an understanding of the demographic profiles of users necessary to the application of training in cultural heritage to different cultural groups. Questions were grouped into sections, with Section A asking questions pertaining to understandings of cultural heritage, Section B investigating whether users had access to the Internet at home, and if so, how much bandwidth was available to them; Section C explored information seeking and evaluation (information literacy) patterns, and Section D explored learning
