Loammi Baldwin (1745-1807) papers series includes personal and business correspondence, real estate and estate papers, maps, memos, drawings, almanacs, deeds, diaries, and other materials, relating to family affairs, his activities as chief engineer of the Middlesex Canal, real estate, a trip (1794) to Philadelphia, Pa., and other subjects. Cyrus Baldwin (1773-1834) papers series consists of his personal and business correspondence, bills and receipts, legal and estate papers, almanacs, and diaries, pertaining to Middlesex and other canals, the estate of Loammi Baldwin (1745-1807), and family matters. Benjamin F. Baldwin's (1777-1821) papers contain correspondence, financial, legal and military papers, almanacs, memo books, survey books, and other papers, documenting personal affairs, engineering projects, trips to Baltimore, Md., Washington, D.C., and other cities, lands owned, and surveying roads in Massachusetts and North Carolina.

His son Lucius Albert Barbour is represented in the collection by letters from Goodrich H. Barbour of Ohio, Edwin C. Barbour of Michigan or Indiana, and George, Fidelia and Willis Baldwin of New York State.

Also includes correspondence from Sarah Baldwin Hadley's siblings, Abram Baldwin, Hannah Burnham Baldwin, Dr. Helen Baldwin, Lucy Baldwin, and Henry Baldwin, as well as the correspondence of her sons, Henry Brooks Hadley and David B. Hadley, and her father, Elijah Baldwin. Includes financial papers, bills and receipts, deeds, estate inventories and probate records, tax records, and journals. School notebooks and notes are also included. Contains some materials related to the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. Contains some dried flower specimens as a result of Sarah Baldwin Hadley's membership in the Connecticut Botanical Society. Includes a folder of dairy inspections to Sarah Baldwin Hadley's farm in Canterbury. Genealogy of the Hadley and Baldwin families is included.

Elijah Baldwin Sr. and Jr. were both physicians, the first in Canterbury, the second in Plainfield, Connecticut. Of note are tax and other records from the town of Canterbury.

The elder Loammi Baldwin's work on the Middlesex Canal is recorded in a volume of the history of the canal compiled from Baldwin's papers by his son, James Fowle. It contains a list of canal acts, subscribers, and building contracts along with a discussion of the progress of building from an early land survey to letters that consider the construction of canal boats. Letters from William Weston, also an engineer on the project, were copied into the volume. Notices of payment due dates and meeting times and places document Loammi Baldwin's involvement with the Charles River Bridge.
