James Harkness, a Revolutionary War soldier, was born at Newton, Massachusetts, the son of John Harkness (1690-1747). He was living at Pelham, Massachusetts, by 1755. He married Nancy Agnes Gray, daughter of John Gray, an immigrated from Ireland, in 1757. They had seven children, 1760-1780. He died at Pelham in 1779 at age 57. Nancy Gray Harkness and her family migrated to Salem, Washington County, New York, in 1790. Nancy died there in 1824 at age 85. Her son, John Harkenss (1760-1843), a Revolutionary War soldier, migrated to Springfield Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, in 1804. His grandson, Chester Harkness (1806-1899), was born near Big Pond, Pennsylvania. He married Lousia Smith (1808-1868), ca. 1829. They had six children, 1830-1839. Chester and Louisia Harkness are buried near Big Pond. Descendants listed lived in Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Oklanhoma and elsewhere
