The largest part of the papers consists of deeds for properties in New Haven, East Haven, Fair Haven, Branford, Hamden and Guilford, Connecticut. Also included are manifests for slaves shipped from New Haven to Savannah, Charleston and Norfolk (1822-1824). The major figures are Elias Bradley Bishop of New Haven and Jonathan Bishop Sr. and Jr. of Guilford.

The collection consists of papers of the Bishop family of Athens, Georgia from 1857-1883. The papers consist mostly of correspondence (1857-1859) from Thomas Bishop to his son Edward P. Bishop in which he discusses the family's mercantile business, other businesses in Athens, social life and events, and family news. The collection also includes a diary (July 1877 - January 1880) of Edward Thomas Bishop of Athens which discusses Presbyterian religious life, college life at the University of Georgia, social life, books he has read, and the death of William Henry Waddel.
