The major figures are Elias Bradley Bishop of New Haven and Jonathan Bishop Sr. and Jr. of Guilford.

The papers consist mostly of correspondence (1857-1859) from Thomas Bishop to his son Edward P. Bishop in which he discusses the family's mercantile business, other businesses in Athens, social life and events, and family news. The collection also includes a diary (July 1877 - January 1880) of Edward Thomas Bishop of Athens which discusses Presbyterian religious life, college life at the University of Georgia, social life, books he has read, and the death of William Henry Waddel.
