Izhodišče: Selektivno serotonergično zdravilo fluoksetin se je pokazalo kot uspešno pri zdravljenju depresije, kaže pa, da pomaga tudi pri zdravljenju odvisnosti od alkohola. Do sedaj še ni bila dokončana nobena študija s selektivnimi serotonergičnimi zdravili pri depresivnih bolnikih, odvisnih od alkohola, kljub opažanju, da sta tako depresija kot tudi odvisnost od alkoholapovezana z zmanjšano serotonergično aktivnostjo. Metode: Naključno smoizbrali 51 bolnikov z diagnozama odvisnost od alkohola in depresija. V času12 tednov trajajoče dvojno slepe študije dveh analognih skupin bolnikov jeena skupina (n=25) jemala fluoksetin, druga (n=26) pa placebo. V teh 12 tednih so bili pri bolnikih tedensko ocenjeni simptomi depresije in uživanje alkohola. Rezultati: V skupini, ki je jemala fluoksetin, je bilo izboljšanje simptomov depresije precej boljše kot pri skupini, ki je jemala placebo. V skupini, ki je jemala fluoksetin je bilo zaužitega skupno precej manj alkoholav primerjavi s skupino, ki je prejemala placebo. Zaključek: Fluoksetinučinkovito zmanjšuje simptome depresije in uživanje alkohola pri bolnikih, ki so depresivni in odvisni od alkohola. Ni pa znano, ali ti izsledki veljajo tudi za manj depresivne in manj suicidalne etilike
