Shipping papers series (1736-1812) includes ships' papers of vessels owned or mastered by family members, including inventory of the brig Gipsy's voyage to India; records of fish caught by the schooner Sally; correspondence from foreign and domestic merchants in Kittery, Me., Portsmouth, N.H., Philadelphia, Pa., London, England, and Barcelona and Bilbao, Spain; correspondence of John, Jr., regarding French spoliation claim on the brig Welcome Return; master's correspondence of Josiah Orne aboard several vessels; financial records of Joseph Cabot, Jr., including distillery accounts and accounts of schooners Tryall, Sally, and other vessels; and miscellaneous shipping papers. Includes information relating to the family firm J. & A. Cabot (founded by George, John, and Andrew Cabot, and their brother-in-law, Joseph Lee), its fish interests, and considerable trade with West Indian and Spanish ports.

His daughter, Eliza Perkins, married Samuel Cabot and her reminiscences of 19th century Boston are in the collection. The largest body of papers, 1840-1902, those of James Elliot Cabot and his wife Elisabeth Dwight describe life in 19th century Boston and discuss the Civil War. Correspondents include Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Charles Eliot Norton, Frederick Law Olmsted and Theodore Parker. Also included in the collection are early 20th century childcare diaries of Cabot mothers.
