Rf design and operating performance of the bnl/aes 1.3 ghz single cell superconducting rf photocathode electron gun( )

1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Over the past several years Advanced Energy Systems and BNL have been collaborating on the development and testing of a fully superconducting photocathode electron gun. Over the past year we have begun to realize significant results which have been published elsewhere [1]. This paper will review the RF design of the gun under test and present results of its performance under various operating conditions. Results for cavity quality factor will be presented for various operating temperatures and cavity field gradients. We will also discuss future plans for testing using this gun

Heat tolerance of elderly persons living in a subtropical climate by M Cole( Book )

2 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The capacity of elderly persons to tolerate a standardized heat-work load was measured under rigidly controlled conditions on a group of 32 females, average age 69 years, and a group of 68 males, average age 72 years, who lived in the St. Petersburg area; age range was 60-93 years. The standard test consisted of five minute seated rest followed by four five-minute work periods on a bicycle ergometer. Each work period was followed by a ten minute rest period while seated on the ergometer. The four work periods were at progressively increasing levels of severity with average O2 consumptions of 10, 13, 16 and 19 cc/kg per minute at 92F dry-bulb and 82F wet-bulb temperatures. Pulse rates, ventilation rates, O2 consumption and oral temperatures were measured during the last minute of each work period. Twelve lead EKG were taken and blood cholesterols were measured. Those with abnormal EKG's did not have higher cholesterol levels. Ability to tolerate the heat-work load was surprisingly good. Under conditions of heat and at a level of work that required an O2 consumption four times resting values pulse rates were 119 for the females and 105 for the males. The pulse rates for the females were 10-15 beats per minute lower than those observed in a group of young and middle aged women performing the same rate of work at 'comfort temperatures.' For the males the work pulse rates were only slightly (2-6 beats per minute) lower than those observed in a large group of young and middle aged coal miners. It appears that elderly persons who are free from active disease processes can tolerate a moderate heat-work load without difficulty. (Author)

Proceedings of the Conference on Joint Problem Solving and Microcomputers( Book )

1 edition published in 1983 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A group of American and Japanese psychologists, anthropologists, linguists and computer scientists gathered at UCSD to discuss the role of joint problem solving in the learning process. A central issue for the group was expert-novice interaction both when the expert is a human and when it is embodied in a microcomputer tutoring system. Much of the discussion focused on microcomputers as instruments for organizing instruction. The group addressed questions such as: are new principles of learning likely to arise out of research using microprocessors? What kinds of learning models are likely to be most effective in exploiting the power of this technology? How can principles of human interaction be applied to the design of learning environments?

Biosynthetic infochemical communication( )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract: There is an ever-increasing demand for data to be embedded in our environment at ever-decreasing temporal and spatial scales. Whilst current communication and storage technologies generally exploit the electromagnetic properties of media, chemistry offers us a new alternative for nanoscale signaling using molecules as messengers with high information content. Biological systems effectively overcome the challenges of chemical communication using highly specific biosynthetic pathways for signal generation together with specialized protein receptors and nervous systems. Here we consider a new approach for information transmission based upon nature's quintessential example of infochemical communication, the moth pheromone system. To approach the sensitivity, specificity and versatility of infochemical communication seen in nature, we describe an array of biologically-inspired technologies for the production, transmission, detection, and processing of molecular signals. We show how it is possible to implement each step of the moth pheromone pathway for biosynthesis, transmission, receptor protein binding/transduction, and antennal lobe processing of monomolecular and multimolecular signals. For each implemented step, we discuss the value, current limitations, and challenges for the future development and integration of infochemical communication technologies. Together, these building blocks provide a starting point for future technologies that can utilize programmable emission and detection of multimolecular information for a new and robust means of communicating chemical information
