Dolls as Advertising Gimmicks is an exhibit of trade cards, with a few photographs as well, featuring dolls, prepared by Diane DeBlois with material from the collection of her mother Babbie DeBlois. The introduction is followed by several sections: Playing with Dolls as Rehearsal for Adult Life, Playing Doctor, The Tea Party, The Sewing Circle, and Wash Day. All the cards depict girls and boys playing with or holding dolls. The cards advertise a wide range of products, including dress patterns, thread, sewing machines, scales, coffee, soap, insurance, blood bitters, medicines, cologne, and tea, as well as department, toy, and book stores. One card is in the shape of a paper doll. One card, advertising a Buffalo, New York, department store, also features attractions from the Pan-American Expostion held in Buffalo in 1901. Although these cards were brought together in 2000, they date from the 19th and early 20th centuries
