Most of the correspondence is from Helen and is available in the collection in photocopy format. Other correspondents are Rev. John Dodd and his wife. The family was living in Arcade, New York in 1862, the date of the earliest letter. Helen joined the AMA teaching staff in schools for freedmen in 1863 and taught in Virginia and North Carolina schools. Other letters from her and her father are in the American Missionary Association Archives. Topics include anti-slavery sentiments; civilian life in Virginia during the Civil War; attitudes of the populace toward General Butler and his troops; toward the teachers of blacks; and about the eagerness of former slaves to obtain education
