An Investigation of Factors Influencing Learning in the Mentally Retarded, and Their Use in the Design of Instructional Materials. Interim Report by Michael Farmer( Book )

1 edition published in 1969 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

To compare social versus mechanical presentation of stimulus material under prompted or trial-and-error (confirmation) conditions of learning, institutionalized educable and trainable mentally handicapped children were tested on a discrimination learning task. Results were felt to indicate that social reinforcement may not be as motivating for trainable as for educable subjects; and that prompted learning is not as effective as trial-and-error learning for discrimination tasks and trainable subjects. An investigation of parasitic SOI elements and their application in a thermally regulated bandgap reference by Michael Farmer( )

1 edition published in 2000 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This thesis examines a particular set of properties of Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) devices and their application to a bandgap voltage reference. SOI is a specialized process intended to boost various performance parameters of a traditional bulk process by embedding an insulating layer below the surface of the silicon. Some of the advantages of SOI over traditional bulk processes are as follows: higher frequency response, higher tolerance to harsh radiation, and greater density of logic circuits. However, two parasitic effects, the lateral bipolar action and the self-heating effect, inherent in SOI MOSFET devices have impeded the use of SOI. A goal of this investigation is to model these behaviors using existing electrical elements in HSPICE. Ultimately, this thesis attempts to utilize these two effects to create a thermally regulated bandgap voltage reference that can be utilized on a SOI CMOS process

Feasibility of the tactical UAV as a combat identification tool by Michael P Farmer( Book )

1 edition published in 2001 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Soldiers maneuvering on the 21st Century battlefield are issued state-of-the-art equipment. Despite this, the tools at their disposal to identify targets as being a [beta]friend[gamma] or a [beta]foe[gamma] have changed little since Operation Desert Storm. While improved optics on late model combat systems are extending gunners[alpha] abilities to identify targets at extended ranges, an optics-vs.- ballistics gap remains in the majority of U.S. Army ground maneuver forces. This gap, and other battlefield factors, increases the likelihood of fratricides in combat. This thesis examines the feasibility of using the Army[alpha]s Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (TUAV) as a combat identification (CID) tool for troops at the tactical level. Three scenarios were modeled and multiple simulations run to identify potential problems in using the TUAV as a CID tool, as well as ways to improve the system if it is used in this role. Model considerations included current and planned future datalink bandwidths, system delays, normal vs. immediate taskings, and travel times to mission areas. The thesis demonstrates that if TUAVs are properly integrated into tactical mission planning and imagery analysts possess the necessary level of vehicle identification training (to include thermal identification training), the TUAV can function well as a CID tool
