Notes on linear programming by David Gale(
Book
)
3 editions published between 1956 and 1958 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A proof of a generalization of a wellknown combinational theorem of P. Hall. A set of origins (A) and destinations (B) are assumed to be connected by a network of finite capacity. A simple necessary and sufficient condition is given for the existence of a flow from A to B so that the flows into B shall attain prescribed values

General equilibrium for linear models by David Gale(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1957 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A study of the price equilibrium for models of pure exchange in which the preferences of the consumers are given by linear utility functions. Not only is a simple irreducibility condition shown to be sufficient for the existence of equilibrium, but also this equilibrium is shown to be essentially unique. A simple dynamic mechanism, believed to converge to an equilibrium, is proposed, and the bargaining model of Nash and the problem of aggregating utility functions are treated

Transient flows in networks by David Gale(
Book
)
3 editions published in 1958 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The paper is concerned with flows in twoterminal dynamic networks as defined by Ford and Fulkerson. These authors have shown how to construct for each positive integer k a flow phi sub k that maximizes the amount u sub k shipped from source to sink in k time periods. Their method leads to different functions phi sub k for different values of k. It is here shown that the problem can be solved by means of a single flow phi that at each time k maximizes the cumulative amount shipped from source to sink; the conclusion holds even when the capacities and transit times in the network are allowed to vary with time. The results of this paper are applicable, for instance, to the analysis of logistics problems involving railway networks. (Author)

On the structure of steady state trade equilibrium by David Gale(
Book
)
3 editions published between 1971 and 1972 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The paper is concerned with the problem of trade imbalance, that is, trade situations in which the value of imports and exports of a given country are not equal (such an imbalance is called a trade deficit or surplus according as imports are greater than or less than exports). Traditional trade theory appears to assert that in the long run the conditions of economic equilibrium imply that each country's trade configuration must approach balance so that its exports are sufficient to pay for its imports. The purpose of this paper is to show that the implied assertion is incorrect, and that the forces of equilibrium will not, except by coincidence, bring about a trade balance in any country. It is shown instead, that in a steady state equilibrium some countries end up being perpetual net importers and others perpetual net exporters. (Author)

Price equilibrium for infinite horizon economic models by David Gale(
Book
)
2 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The paper analyzes onesector models of general equilibrium over an infinite time horizon in which there are an infinite number of agents, these being the members of successive generations. Three aspects of these models are nonoptimalities in the form of productive inefficiency, and comsumption nonoptimality due to 'inflationary' equilibria, the role of 'credit and its effect on the equilibrium is discussed and it is shown that for simple exchange models steady state equilibria are possible with a permanent imbalance of trade in which one country constantly exports to the other, a phenomenon which cannot occur in the classical model. Pure Exchange Equilibrium of Dynamic Economic Models by David Gale(
Book
)
2 editions published between 1971 and 1972 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The paper studies competitive equilibrium over time of a one good model in which the agents are members of a population which grows at a constant rate. Each agent lives for n periods and in the ith period of his life receives an endowment of e sub i units of goods. Goods can neither be produced nor stored. The model is thus the n period generalization of the two and three period models studied by Samuelson. The author seeks to ascertain the structure of the time paths of consumption in these models.
