A note on polynomial and separable games by David Gale( Book )

3 editions published between 1957 and 1960 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It is shown that, given a pair of infinite metric spaces and a pair of respective finite mixed strategies on them, there exists a separable game with bounded continuous payoff on their cartesian product such that the given strategies constitute the unique solution of the game. If the spaces are identical, then, corresponding to any given finite mixture, one can find a symmetric polynomial-like game with bounded (skew-symmetric) continuous payoff such that the given strategy is the only optimal one. A stronger conclusion holds if the spaces are bounded sub spaces of Euclidean n-space with sufficiently many cluster points in their closures, in that the payoff can be a polynomial and have the desired property. Transient flows in networks by David Gale( Book )

3 editions published in 1958 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The paper is concerned with flows in two-terminal dynamic networks as defined by Ford and Fulkerson. These authors have shown how to construct for each positive integer k a flow phi sub k that maximizes the amount u sub k shipped from source to sink in k time periods. Their method leads to different functions phi sub k for different values of k. It is here shown that the problem can be solved by means of a single flow phi that at each time k maximizes the cumulative amount shipped from source to sink; the conclusion holds even when the capacities and transit times in the network are allowed to vary with time. The results of this paper are applicable, for instance, to the analysis of logistics problems involving railway networks. (Author)

On the structure of steady state trade equilibrium by David Gale( Book )

3 editions published between 1971 and 1972 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The paper is concerned with the problem of trade imbalance, that is, trade situations in which the value of imports and exports of a given country are not equal (such an imbalance is called a trade deficit or surplus according as imports are greater than or less than exports). Traditional trade theory appears to assert that in the long run the conditions of economic equilibrium imply that each country's trade configuration must approach balance so that its exports are sufficient to pay for its imports. The purpose of this paper is to show that the implied assertion is incorrect, and that the forces of equilibrium will not, except by coincidence, bring about a trade balance in any country. It is shown instead, that in a steady state equilibrium some countries end up being perpetual net importers and others perpetual net exporters. (Author)

Price equilibrium for infinite horizon economic models by David Gale( Book )

2 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The paper analyzes one-sector models of general equilibrium over an infinite time horizon in which there are an infinite number of agents, these being the members of successive generations. Three aspects of these models are non-optimalities in the form of productive inefficiency, and comsumption non-optimality due to 'inflationary' equilibria, the role of 'credit and its effect on the equilibrium is discussed and it is shown that for simple exchange models steady state equilibria are possible with a permanent imbalance of trade in which one country constantly exports to the other, a phenomenon which cannot occur in the classical model.
