A collection of correspondence from Daniel Goodwin, a student at Plainfield Academy, to his guardian, Ebenezer Barnard, of Hartford, Connecticut. Later Goodwin was in Greenfield, Massachusetts; Southington, Connecticut; New York; and finally Boston. Following the correspondence to Barnard are letters to Goodwin from his mother, Anna Goodwin, and others. All letters have been glued to the ticket stubs of State of Connecticut auditor Elisha Dodd's City Orders book (1827).

This collection contains correspondence, diaries, and other records of the Goodwin family. Includes a photo album of Mary Goodwin's European tour in 1867, Lucy (Morgan) Goodwin's passport for the same trip, and diaries kept by the two women over a number of years. Also found in the collection are assorted papers of James Junius Goodwin, a visitors' book to his home, a book of addresses and at-home days, and a record of family life events kept by Lucy (Morgan) Goodwin. Correspondents include Eunice (Roberts) Goodwin, James Goodwin, James J. Goodwin, Lucy (Morgan) Goodwin, M.M. Smith, Francis Goodwin, Sarah Goodwin, Mary Goodwin, Philip Lippincott Goodwin, J. Pierpont Morgan, Junius Spencer Morgan, Sarah S. Morgan, Julia P. Smith, Morgan Smith, James H. Greene, W.H. Thorne, and opera singer Marcia Van Dresser. Newspaper clippings have been removed from the collection. Genealogical material compiled about the Goodwin family is also included.

Primarily personal and church-related correspondence of a Hartford, Connecticut, minister. Correspondents include Elizabeth H. Colt, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Junius Spencer Morgan, Francis' father James Goodwin, his sister Mary, and Francis' wife Mary Alsop Jackson Goodwin. Francis' papers also document his long history as pastor of Trinity Church in Hartford, his interest in developing Keney Park and expanding it with a park named after his own family, his work as trustee of the Wadsworth Atheneum, and his continuing contact with Berkeley Divinity School. Additional family members included in the collection are Francis' mother Lucy Morgan Goodwin, and his siblings Sarah Morgan Goodwin Brownell and James J. Goodwin.

The more than 360 items in this collection reflect building projects undertaken by the Goodwins that were supervised by T.A. Curtis from 1889 to 1893, including: specifications, contracts, monthly reports on work in progress sent to the Goodwins from Curtis, measurements, and comments on construction details. Buildings represented include: the Residence of Rev. Francis Goodwin, Woodside (the Goodwin family home), the Wadsworth Athenaeum, Trinity Church, a house on the corner of Brook and Fairmont Sts., the Putnam Phalanx Armory, a commercial building on the east corner of Asylum and Haynes St.(which was to be used for insurance rooms and stores), and a building on the west corner of Haynes and Pearl Sts. (possibly an addition to the famed Goodwin Building). The latter three buildings, designed by architect George Keller, formed part of the Goodwin commercial block. Contractors represented are Hiram Bissell (mason), C.B. Andrus (mason), the Barrett Bros. (carpenters), N.A. Bosworth (steam heating), and Robinson Lead Co. (plumbing and gas fittings), A. W. Scoville (builder), R.T. Oakes & Co. (electricians), and Longstaff & Hurd (general contractors).

Primarily deeds of a Hartford, Connecticut founding family, including three generations of William Goodwins who lived 1629-1774. Includes Hartford apprenticeship indentures, 1714-1715. Also includes liquor licenses, financial records and correspondence from the East Hartford, Connecticut branch of the family, namely Joseph, Caleb, Edward S., Edward O. and Joseph O. Goodwin. Papers of two non-Goodwin individuals are included, deeds, 1714-1716, of Thomas Bidwell of Hartford, and Timothy Pitkin's expenses on a trip to Boston, 1808.

Watson-Goodwin papers, 1692-1911 ( )

Papers of the inter-related Watson and Goodwin families of Plymouth, Mass. The bulk of the collection is family correspondence, including letters exchanged between John and Lucia (Marston) Goodwin of Plymouth and their son George Watson in Middleborough and Boston; and between Benjamin M. Watson, his wife Lucretia B. Watson, and their daughter, Lucretia Anne Watson (later Mrs. Hersey B. Goodwin) while Goodwin was a student at Harvard University (Class of 1826) and the Harvard Divinity School (Class of 1829), and as minister of the First Parish in Concord (Unitarian). Following Lucretia Goodwin's death in 1831, Hersey Goodwin continued to correspond regularly with his in-laws, Benjamin M. and Lucretia B. Watson, until his own death in 1836, particularly about the care of his son William Watson Goodwin who was living with the Watsons in Plymouth. The collection also contains a few papers of William W. Goodwin, including correspondence with his grandparents; Harvard essays and lists of expenses of Hersey B. Goodwin (Class of 1826) and William W. Goodwin (Class of 1851); genealogical notes and charts; and a Watson "family book" containing copies of family correspondence and genealogical notes. Additional correspondents include William P. Lunt, Benjamin Marston, and Ezra Ripley.

Chiefly papers and family correspondence of Dr. Beverly Preston Morriss (b. 1822) of Amherst County, Va., physician and partner in Coons and Morriss, a tanning business, 1863-1865, which supplied the Confederate army, relating to the tanning business and the settling of family property in Virginia and West Virginia. Also included are scattered papers, 1875- 1897, of John W. Goodwin, of Lynchburg, Va., an agent with the Norfolk and Western and other railroads, consisting of business and some family letters.

Papers of the Goodwin family, especially the correspondence and papers of Richard Chapman Goodwin. Papers include several compositions of R.C. Goodwin while a student at Boston Latin School; letters between his parents Lucy and Ozias Goodwin; and letters to his family during his travels in England, France, and Italy. While serving as a captain in the Massachusetts Volunteers, 2nd Regiment, Goodwin wrote extensively to his mother of the conduct of commanding officers N.P. Banks, George Gordon, and George McClellan, and of camp life and troop movements until his death at the Battle of Cedar Mountain. Newspapers and correspondence following Goodwin's death relate the events of the battle and convey condolences to the Goodwin family. Additional correspondents were Goodwin's brother Ozias, and sisters Eliza Goodwin and Lucy Goodwin Wadsworth.

Correspondence of the Goodwin family of Hartford, Connecticut. Arranged in chronological order, most of the letters were written to Mary Alsop Jackson Goodwin, wife of Rev. Francis Goodwin. Includes sympathy cards written on the death of the Goodwins' daughter, Sarah Morgan Goodwin Robinson in 1909, a eulogy for the Goodwins' son, Rev. James Goodwin in 1917, and copies of letters about Jackson family history. While some of the correspondence was from friends, the bulk was from the Goodwins' children and grandchildren. Pieces of note include the baptismal certificate for Mary Alsop Jackson (1842) and letters certifying her membership in organizations such as the Connecticut Society of the Colonial Dames of America.
