Distribution of the ice thickness in the Beaufort Sea by René O Ramseier( Book )

2 editions published between 1975 and 2012 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Although it was not possible to measure sea ice thickness directly, monthly maps indicating the distribution of first-year and multiyear ice for the entire Beaufort Sea region were prepared from Nimbus 5 passive microwave imagery. Detailed investigation of the shear zone was performed using 13.4 GHz scatterometer and X-band SLR imagery for April 1975. A description of the various sensors employed and an outline of the development of a UHF radar for direct measurement of sea ice thickness are included ... The purpose of this study was to obtain ice thickness distribution in the Beaufort Sea. To achieve this goal direct and indirect methods were required, such as measuring the ice thickness directly by UHF radar or inferring the ice thickness from surface or near-surface data. Because of the large area under study and the general nature of the problem, remote sensing techniques offer the only means of obtaining the necessary data. Of the remote sensing techniques available, microwave sensors (both of the active and passive type) were used to generate the bulk of the data"--Page 1

Joe Chambers: musical style and concept, 1964-1973 by Christian Schnorr( )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This dissertation discusses the postbob-drumming contributions of percussionist, composer and educator Joe Chambers. The analysis of his musical style and concept will focus on the period between his 1964 recording debut with Freddie Hubbard and his first album as a bandleader in 1973. This period represents a seminal chapter in Chambers' lengthy career, during which he developed and refined his distinct musical style and innovative concepts of modern jazz drumming. Some of the most significant components of his characteristic drumming style will be discussed and illustrated by detailed analysis and extensive commentary of selected musical performances. This analysis is integral to the understanding of Joe Chambers' highly diverse musical aesthetics and sublime percussive soundscapes. Perhaps most significantly, the conclusions drawn from the interpretation of analytical observations are supplemented and supported by Chambers' personal insights, historic anecdotes and critical evaluations, predominately obtained from a series of interviews with the author. The unique perspectives Chambers revealed in these conversations were vital for the validity of this study, as they shed light on a legendary musician whose musical contributions were seminal to the evolution of postbop drumming and the continuing emancipation of the instrument

Liturgical Jazz: The Lineage of the Subgenre in the Music of Edgar E. Summerlin by Derick Cordoba( )

1 edition published in 2017 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This dissertation discusses the lineage of liturgical jazz with a particular focus on Edgar Eugene ⁰́₋Ed⁰́₊ Summerlin (1928-2006). This lineage stretches back into the late 1950s, but has largely been unexplored beyond a select few high-profile artists. I trace the evolution of liturgical jazz from several composers⁰́₉ earliest attempts to the present day. Although the liturgical jazz movement began in the late 1950s, it was primarily a product of the turbulent 1960s in America. This was a period of great change and exploration not only in jazz but in organized religion as well. A deep and frank discussion emerged as to what liturgical music should and would be allowed to sound like. These decisions at the highest levels of denominations had ramifications that are still being felt today in the churches of America; however, the primary focus of this dissertation is on the formative period of liturgical jazz during the 1960s and early 1970s. These years give a basis for better understanding and appreciating the development and defining features of liturgical jazz. Summerlin is a figure that is often cited as a pioneer in liturgical jazz, but no one has offered a history of his life, his music, or why his liturgical music was so revolutionary. This dissertation gives an extensive history of Summerlin and his music. It also creates a clear timeline of the early formation and evolution of this subgenre of jazz
