Mechanical Behavior of 97.2% W Alloy in Tension at High Temperatures
(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1994 in English and held by 1 library worldwide The objective was to investigate the behavior of 97.2% tungsten alloy in tension. A modified button head specimen was heated using resistive heating techniques. The affect high temperatures, medium strain rates, and heating rates had on the stress-strain results were observed. A high speed optical pyrometer and an optical clip gage were utilized for temperature and strain measurements. The optical clip gage could measure strain at strain rates up to 11.8/s. The room temperature experiments were at strain rates of 10-(exp 4)/s, 10-(exp 2)/s, and 5/s. The high heating rate experiments were at temperatures of 727 deg C, and 1097 deg C, heating rates of 5.4 deg C/sec and 536 deg C/sec and a strain rate of 5/s. Increase in yield point and flow stress were observed as the heating rate was increased. A modified Johnson-Cook (MJ+C) material model was proposed to include the effect of heating rate. The constants in the MJ+C model were determined based on the experimental results. Tungsten, High temperatures, Strain rate, Material modeling.
Large Strain Compression of Two Tungsten Alloys at Various Strain Rates
(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1992 in English and held by 1 library worldwide This report describes the material characterization of two tungsten alloys in terms of their modulus of elasticity, yield stresses, and true stress- true strain curves. These alloys are W2 (Kennametal) with 97.2% tungsten and X21 (Teledyne, Firth, and Sterling) with 93% tungsten. Both alloys were compressed to strains between 40% and 75%, and at strain rates between 0.0001/sec and 3000/sec. The experiments were conducted in the Medium Strain Rate Machine (MSRM) and Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) facilities at the U.S. Army Materials Technology Laboratory (MTL). The effect of strain rate was ascertained for each alloy and a comparison conducted on their stress-strain relationships. Metallographic examinations of the microstructure were conducted on both tungsten alloys to determine if adiabatic shear bands had developed. Zones of shear deformation were observed but were attributed to frictional effects at the ends of specimens. At large deformations, frictional effects cause specimen barrelling and a three-dimensional stress state. Annular grooves were machined into the ends of the specimens and, in addition, Teflon(TM) sheets provided lubrication thereby eliminating frictional effects. Both alloys are strain rate sensitive; however, the W2 alloy is somewhat more sensitive at higher strain- rates. No adiabatic shear bands were observed and shear deformation due to frictional effects was eliminated by using the modified specimen and Teflon(TM) sheeting.
The Baltic: A Sea in Transition
(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1991 in English and held by 1 library worldwide The objective of this thesis is to analyze naval developments in the countries abutting the Baltic Sea. Major international security events have radically altered the political landscape surrounding the region. Fundamental changes to the regional security environment are affecting naval building and modernization plans. This region should be of primary concern to the United States political and naval leadership because it comprises one of the world's largest concentrations of naval combatants. The navies deployed in the Baltic Sea are highly capable, and the geographic importance of the region has predicated a unique pattern of naval development. As regional threats to international security emerge, littoral naval warfare will become increasingly difficult to manage. Examination of the Baltic naval balance should provide a useful tool for monitoring national intentions in that region as well as forecasting future littoral naval threats elsewhere.
Deformation Behavior of SiC/2014 Al Metal-Matrix Composite
(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1989 in English and held by 1 library worldwide The deformation behavior of a composite composed of 25-volume-percent silicon carbide (SiC) whiskers in 2014 aluminum matrix was studied. Specimens were taken from a hot isostatically pressed cylindrical billet, then tested at various loading conditions and strain rates. Mechanical deformation of the composite was performed using tension, compression, torsion, Bauschinger effect, and fracture toughness testing. Deformation of the composite under shock loading/unloading and spallation threshold were determined. Elastic wave velocities at high pressures to 1.5 GPa and volume compression to 4.5 GPa were measured to determine the pressure dependence of elastic constants and isothermal and adiabatic equations of state. Keywords: Elastic constants; High temperature; Spallation; Metal-matrix composites; Strain rate; Fracture toughness; Shock loading; Equation of state; Deformation; Baushinger effect; Composite materials.
Development of a Doppler Radar Technique for the Detection of Bird Hazards to Aircraft
(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1975 in English and held by 1 library worldwide The purpose of this research project was to develop a radar technique to detect the presence of flying birds potentially hazardous to aircraft near airport runways; to distinguish them from other radar targets; to estimate the size and number of birds in order to assess the hazard. The motions of a bird in flight are characterized by a distinctive velocity spectrum that can be detected by radar. These 'aural signatures' were identified by Doppler technique and verified by visual sightings. This report provides a description of the analysis techniques, compares range-gated to nonrange-gated systems and also conventional and Doppler radars. A discussion concerning modification of a typical system to a Doppler system is included. A method of determining the actual number of birds in the target volume is discussed. The report also includes a scene-by-scene description of a film presentation made to more fully quantify the Doppler technique. (Author).
