Organic extractables in primary-treated municipal wastewater and uptake in exposed juvenile chinook salmon a preliminary study at Iona Island sewage treatment plant, Vancouver, B.C. by Canada( Book )

5 editions published between 1985 and 1986 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Juvenile chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), were exposedexperimentally to 0, 1, 6 and 16% concentrations of Iona Island sewage indilution water pumped from the Fraser River North Arm. Fish were sampled atthree to five day intervals and pooled carcasses and livers analysed for theuptake of toxic organics. The exposure study was terminated prematurelydue to high mortalities induced by as pathogenic parasite infection, together with plant problems. The fish may not have been in a healthycondition during part of the exposure and the uptake data must beinterpreted with caution. Analysis of fish carcass extracts by electroncapture gas chromatography showed the uptake of tetrachlorophenol, pentachlorophenol, DDE, DD, DDT, PCB's and series of five unknowns which didnot match any common pesticides or herbicides
The use of a pulp mill effluent mixing zone during winter by juvenile chinook salmon in the Fraser River at Prince George, British Columbia by Brian Emmett( Book )

5 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Describes a study in which investigators examined the abundance and residency of juvenile chinook salmon in a pulp mill effluent mixing zone and in an upstream reference zone on the Fraser River. They used night-time snorkel surveys of the nearshore zone of the river to assess fish abundance. Residency was assessed by capturing juvenile chinook with a diver-operated submersible electrofisher and marking them with freeze brands. Additional snorkel surveys and conventional electrofishing were conducted in the effluent and reference zones during the day to document the diel movements of juvenile chinook in winter. All surveys were carried out in the winter of 1993-94, marking a total of 154 juvenile chinook. The study intended to determine whether fish used the effluent mixing zone during winter low flow conditions and to determine whether there was a preferential use of the zone by fish in winter, possibly due to the elevated temperature regime
