SRW/U with OAI expected and unexpected synergies
by Robert Sanderson
(
Book
)
1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 1 library worldwide SRW/U (the Search/Retrieve Webservice) and OAI (Open Archives Initiative) are both modern information retrieval protocols developed by distinct groups from different backgrounds at around the same time. This article sets out to briefly contrast the two protocols' aims and approaches, and then to look at some novel ways in which they have been or may be usefully co-implemented. While using SRW as a search service to an OAI repository or aggregated data set is an obvious synergy, there are also many other useful architectures that can be constructed without bending the protocols' semantics.

Searching digital libraries
by Ralph R LeVan
(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1998 in English and held by 1 library worldwide This paper presents the view that digital objects need to be searchable by users in much the same manner as text objects on the Internet are now. There exist reasonable means to implement such searching. A description of the problematic aspects of such searching is given. One or more reasonable solutions is supplied for each, though it is clear that more research needs to be done on finding optimal methods.
Monticello Project Database design Encoded Archival Description records
by Ralph R LeVan
(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1998 in English and held by 1 library worldwide This article addresses the construction of a database for the Monticello Project containing Encoded Archival Description (EAD) records. Two principal design philosophies were used in the construction: make the data as accessible as possible and keep the returned records as small as possible. All of the work described was done using the standard OCLC tools (sgmlconv, the database-building programs, and WebZ) supplemented with OCLC's tool. Fred, developed by the Office of Research, is a general purpose tool for analyzing and manipulating SGML data. This project was a follow-on to the project reported in the Annual Review of OCLC Research--1996, "The Monticello Project: Design Considerations for a Virtual Library.
Dublin Core and Z39.50
by Ralph R LeVan
(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1998 in English and held by 1 library worldwide This paper proposes a mechanism for using the Dublin Core for search and retrieval in Z39.50. Consensus agreement on this proposal is needed from the Z39.50 Implementors Group and from the Dublin Core community. This paper is not a tutorial on Z39.50. A minimal understanding of Z39.50 is necessary to understand the details of this discussion.
