The Revised Self-Monitoring Scale and Social Skills by Robert L Montgomery( Book )

1 edition published in 1987 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

High scorers on the Self-Monitoring Scale (s-m) typically monitor and control the self-images they project when engaged in social interactions. They are believed to be confident, sociable, and competent in social interactions. The original s-m scale was administered to 101 undergraduate students who also took the revised Self-Monitoring Scales (r/sm), the California Psychological Inventory (cpi), the Social Avoidance and Distress (sad) scale and the Psychosocial Support Inventory (psi). The results were consistent with the view that high scorers on the s-m were confident, sociable, and competent in social interactions. Results from the Other Directed subscale derived from the s-m, however, were not consistent with that view. Overall, the results suggest that the r/sm is an improvement over the original s-m scale. Although the results, in general, were consistent with self-monitoring predictions, many criticisms of the s-m scale voiced by Briggs and Cheek (1986) appear to be valid. In addition, the results for the cpi Self-Control scale were not consistent with Snyder's (1987) report that low self-monitors are better suited than high self-monitors to a single, close, and intimate relationship. Role Conflict for Aides in a Homemaker Aid Program for the Rural Frail Elderly by Frances M Haemmerlie( Book )

1 edition published in 1981 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The importance of programs that help the elderly to continue living at home has been clearly established. Homemaker aides in these programs generally provide homemaking assistance and psychological support to their clients, but may experience role conflict as a result of responding directly to the demands of both clients and the program. Clients (n=27), aides (n=19), and staff members (n=10) of the Senior Services Council (a program to assist the frail elderly in light household chores) provided answers to 18 Likert-type items about situations that might create potential conflict for the aide. Results indicated that staff members considered the potential problems to be more significant than the aides; the aides regarded the potential problems to be more significant than the clients. For all three groups, the primary problem was that the client tried to get the aide to talk about herself and other clients. The perception of a test item as a problem depended upon the rater, I.E., staff member, aide, or client, of the item. These findings suggest that the aide's position is not well understood by the aides, the staff, or the clients. (Nrb)

A "Grassroots"Assessment of Homemaker Needs for the Frail Elderly by Robert L Montgomery( Book )

1 edition published in 1981 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The creation of Title xx of the Social Security Administration in 1975 has led to a tremendous increase in homemaker, task, and home management services to the frail elderly. Several needs assessments of the rural elderly have pointed to discrepancies between services rendered and services actually wanted or needed by clients. The Senior Services Council program was developed to assist the frail elderly with light household tasks so that they could continue to live at home. Clients (n=27) of the program, aides (n=19), and staff members (n=9) completed a semi-structured interview about services provided by the program. Results revealed that clients, aides, and staff differed widely in the frequency and types of responses mentioned, and that these differences depended on whether the program or the aides were being evaluated, and on whether fulfilled needs or unmet needs were considered. Clients, aides, and staff agreed to some extent on important fulfilled and unmet needs. The major inconsistency between the groups was the extent to which the staff placed heavy emphasis on human service and personal maintenance needs. The findings suggest that the seminar services program is highly successful from the standpoint of meeting the role and scope of formal organizational objectives, but that some issues remain unresolved with regard to unmet needs. A Survey of Dual Career Couples in Engineering by Frances M Haemmerlie( Book )

1 edition published in 1981 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Interest in the problems and concerns of dual career couples has increased markedly in the last decade. However, little research has been done with dual career couples in such traditionally non-female professions as engineering. To examine work, home, personal, and interpersonal characteristics and concerns, married female engineering graduates and their spouses completed a questionnaire. Results revealed that financial benefits were cited most often as an advantage, while concern for time problems was cited most often as a disadvantage. The average age of the respondents was under 30 years old, reflecting the relative recency of dual career engineering couples. Most couples did not work at the same facility, and most worked for private organizations. Most took jobs by choice, although more females took jobs by availability. Both partners expressed a similar degree of satisfaction with their jobs, but tended to emphasize the male partner's career when making decisions about a job change. The findings suggest that engineering couples experience many similar concerns of dual career couples in other fields. (Jac)
