Monash : the forgotten Anzac( Visual )

9 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in English and held by 54 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

One of the most brilliant generals of World War I and an architect of Anzac Day, Sir John Monash helped create the Anzac legend by ensuring the courage of his men was enshrined in Australian history. Today he is all but forgotten. This program explores the character and achievements of an extraordinary figure in Australian history, the battles he fought both on and off the battlefield, and the prejudice he overcame to help win a war. It is the story of an unlikely hero; a middle aged German-Jew with great self-belief who fought not just the German army but those on his own side who used his heritage to undermine him. To many, Monash's cultured European background made him unsuitable to command an army made up of egalitarian Australian volunteers, but his sophistication and ease with the British aristocracy allowed him to exhibit his skill as a military strategist. Defeating powerful opposition to become commander of the Australian Corps, Monash devised a plan that won key World War I battles and saved thousands of lives

Lieder by Schubert and Vaughan Williams - With John Moore, Lisette Oropesa, David Shifrin and Gilbert Kalish : The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center( Visual )

1 edition published in 2017 in English and held by 50 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ralph Vaughan Williams composed hundreds of song cycles set to poems by Stevenson, Shakespeare, Chaucer, Rossetti, Whitman, Bunyan, Blake, Housman, and other celebrated writers. Composed between 1901 and 1904, his Songs of Travel and Other Verses are inspired by Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson’s eponymous collection, which tells the tale of a wandering poet who travels around the world in search of a light to give new life to his broken heart, and the work is a sort of musical-spiritual sister to Schubert’s Die Winterreise. The concert’s second half is devoted to Schubert’s Der Hirt auf dem Felsen (“The Shepherd on the Rock”), a beloved Lied of the German Romantic tradition for soprano, clarinet, and piano that sets two poems by Wilhelm Müller and another poem by Karl August Varnhagen von Ense. The 1828 work would be his second-to-last, published a year after his premature death at the age of 31. In this concert, the two masterpieces receive an enchanting and compelling performance by the musicians of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center
