Ready or Not... Perspectives on Literacy and Essential Skills in this Economic Downturn A Canadian Baseline Study by Janet Murray( )

4 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 50 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In March 2009, Movement for Canadian Literacy (mcl) commissioned "Resources for Results", a private research and evaluation firm, to conduct a baseline study to explore the effects of the recent economic downturn on literacy and essential skills programs across Canada. The "Resources for Results" research team interviewed 35 people from across Canada who work in some capacity in the literacy and essential skills field. The purpose of the interviews was to explore the implications of the rapidly changing economic, social and political context for the field of literacy and essential skills. While there are significant differences in the Canadian economic situation regionally, the interviews revealed some common perceptions and observations about the state of literacy across the country. As can be expected, the general reaction to the survey was that it is still "too soon to tell" what the full effects of the downturn will be. Appended are: (1) List of Respondents; (2) More on Methodology and Interview Questions; (3) Summary of Respondents Perceptions to Key Factors; (4) Composite Learning Index; and (5) Provincial and Territorial Overviews. Working Together : Parents and Staff in Nursery Settings by Judy Arrowsmith( Book )

2 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report presents two case studies that document the efforts of two Scottish nursery schools to foster good home-school relations. The schools involved were Dunsmore Nursery School, which serves 40 students in the morning and 20 in the afternoon and which employs a headteacher, 4 nursery nurses, and a caretaker; and Blairhall Nursery School, a small nursery school for 12 children that is attached to a rural primary school. The case studies profile on-going developments at the schools over time. The aims of the parent-teacher collaboration efforts were the same at both schools. These aims were to: (1) establish the nature and extent of parent-teacher partnership from both parents' and staff members' perspectives; (2) clarify policy on parent-teacher partnerships; (3) examine current recording procedures; (4) identify procedures for monitoring and evaluating initiatives involving parents and staff; (5) identify areas for development from the perspectives of staff and parents; (6) draw up a list of areas to be developed and ideas to be tried; (7) renegotiate the policy statement and the recording and evaluation procedures, if necessary; (8) address the top priority area for development; and (9) record, monitor, and evaluate the development of the top priority area. For each of these aims, the report details activities and outcomes at each school and provides relevant record-keeping forms. (Ac)
Enhancing the Skills of School Library Staff to Cater for Individual Student Needs by Janet Murray( Book )

1 edition published in 1999 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper reports on a four-year study that evaluated school library services offered to students with disabilities in two Australian states. Findings regarding staff development activities for school library staff that would assist them in teaching, communicating, and providing for the information needs of students with disabilities are discussed. Results showed that there are currently limited opportunities for school librarians to participate in such programs, beyond those offered in individual schools to the teaching staff as a whole. There is a need for library-specific staff development programs that cover policy formulation, collection development, and adaptive technology aspects of library services for students with disabilities. Sharing action and evaluation : parents and staff working together in early education by Judy Arrowsmith( Book )

1 edition published in 1992 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study explored ways that nursery school staff work with parents, involve parents in evaluation, and improve the nursery experience for both parents and children. The process of assessing parents' and staff's views about all aspects of nursery life, and the use of these views to form the basis of an action plan, are described. The staff and parents of children attending two nursery schools were asked, during discussions or interviews or by means of questionnaires, to describe how parents and staff could work together. Results of the assessment of views were tabulated and discussed with staff. As a result of the study, areas to focus on in developing cooperation between parents and staff were drawn up in the nurseries, and priorities among these areas were debated by staff. Policy statements about cooperation between staff and parents were drafted and discussed in the nurseries. The nurseries invited parents to contribute information about their children's progress at home and in the nursery school, and to comment on nursery activities. (Sm)
An Inclusive School Library for the 21st Century Fostering Independence by Janet Murray( Book )

1 edition published in 1999 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

There are many ways in which the school library can contribute to the personal growth of students with disabilities enrolled in mainstream schools and in fostering acceptance and understanding of these students by their non-disabled peers. A four-year study of school library provision for students with disabilities in two Australian states, Victoria and New South Wales, showed that provision of effective information literacy programs, a welcoming and physically accessible library environment, and access to information technology and electronic information sources can have a significant effect on the development of confidence, independence, and self-esteem in these students. Engaging disabled students as library monitors or offering the library as a work experience placement further assists independence and self-esteem and promotes a positive image of these students to their student colleagues. The provision of a good collection of disability information and sensitive fiction titles also promotes value and acceptance of disability by other students. (Contains 18 references.) (Author/MES)
