Calcineurin knockout mice show a selective loss of small spines( )

Highlights: Knockout of calcineurin reduced small spines in the prefrontal and visual cortices. The reduction was moderate, possibly due to the presence of intrinsic spine dynamics. Calcineurin knockouts and patients with schizophrenia have similar spine phenotypes. Abstract: Calcineurin is required for long-term depression and activity-dependent spine shrinkage, and calcineurin mutations have been identified in patients with schizophrenia. Moreover, mice with conditional knockout of calcineurin B (CNB-KO) exhibit behavioral abnormalities suggestive of schizophrenia. Changes in the dendritic spines of these mice, however, have not been investigated. We therefore examined the dendritic spines of CNB-KO mice, and observed a significant reduction in small spines and an increase in large spines in the prefrontal and visual cortices. The effect of CNB-KO on the spine sizes was relatively moderate, possibly due to the presence of spontaneous fluctuations (dynamics) in the dendritic spines themselves. Thus, CNB-KO mice showed a spine phenotype similar to those recently reported in patients with schizophrenia

Solution growth of chalcopyrite compounds single crystal( )

Abstract: I–III–VI2 chalcopyrite compound Cu(In x, Ga1− x )Se2 (CIGS) single crystal were successfully grown by traveling heater method (THM). The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of the CIGS showed preferred orientations of (112), (220) and (312) planes, confirming the chalcopyrite structure. In Raman spectra, the A1 mode peaks expected for CIGS were observed, and no secondary phases were observed. The full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the X-ray rocking curve (XRC) for the (112) oriented CIGS single crystal is 103arcsec. The composition of the CIGS single crystal was homogeneous and the stoichiometric ratio of CIGS was found to be slightly Cu-poor, In-rich, Ga-rich and Se-poor. The good-quality single-phase CIGS single crystals can be obtained from these results. Highlights: Main purpose is preparation of large-size CIGS (In/Ga=8/2) single crystal growth by THM, which is one of the solution growth.
