"I want to thank my Flaxman Library colleague, Alessia Petrolito. As Alessia worked on her thesis, we often spoke of the 'in-between' of the 'gap, ' as it relates to social, cultural, and racial identity. Our conversations continued and we discussed the gap in film, architecture, and the world around us. This in-betweenness became the subject of this book."--Colophon

Reproductions of found objects that were part of an exhibition at SAIC’s Flaxman Library. “The Flaxman Library presents a selection of curious oddments gathered over a period of more than 20 years by two artists whose collecting habits overlap in a coherent blur. Alexis Petroff’s objects were found primarily on Chicago’s 12th and 31st street beaches, but also include items from the beaches and rivers of France, upstate New York, and rural Virginia. Keith Kostecki’s were picked from alleys, abandoned buildings, train tracks, forest preserves, scrapyards, streets and parks of Chicago and the Chicagoland area, and from places as diverse as a garbage dump in rural India to an abandoned shipyard in Portland, Oregon.”--Statement from the artists
