Included are correspondence, 1776, 1780-1892; agreements concerning land; letterbooks, 1776-1863; accounts regarding the Phelps and Gorham purchase, 1780-1875; bookkeeping journals, daybooks and ledgers of the Phelps and Gorham Company as well as personal accounting books of Oliver Phelps, 1773-1850; Oliver Phelps' personal papers regarding contacts to supply provisions to the United States Army western garrison and the New York Militia garrisons at Fort Jay and West Point, 1798-1809 as well as account records of beef supplied by Phelps to the Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Most significant in the collection are the papers of Philip Phelps and ten scrapbooks of material relating to the Albany and Susquehanna Railroad compiled by William Learned Marcy Phelps. Also significant are several items relating to William Mastercraft, an Albany wheelwright and cartwright, and in-law of the Phelps family.
