The Gay-Butler-Plater Family Papers consist of correspondence, financial records, legal records, photographic materials, and personal papers created and accumulated by the Gay, Butler, Plater, and Price families of Louisiana documenting their political, social, and financial progression between 1814 and 2009. Correspondence consists largely of discussions regarding family news and problems, financial and legal issues, politics, travel, social life, plantation management and activities, and genealogical information. Financial and legal issues are often closely related and should be treated as complimentary information to each other. In addition to personal financial information particular to prominent family members, items reflect the growth of the family estates through investments, acquisitions of property, real estate development, and their capitalization on mineral and oil rights. Many of the early photographic images are portraits of family members. Most of the items related to Acadia Plantation (the Plater family home in Thibodaux, La.) are collected in their own series and for the most part are of a financial, legal, or administrative nature. Information related to the additional properties owned by the family (Calmes Neck, Foxlair, and Play Garden to name a few) are also available and contain information regarding their acquisitions and activities taking place there
