To Close of Not to Close: Desuperimposition and the Future of theCatalogs. Report of the Subcommittee on the Future of the Catalogs, Committee on Bibliographical Control. Phase I by Virginia Pratt( Book )

1 edition published in 1975 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Faced with an old and increasingly complex card catalog and with proposed changes in the Library of Congress (lc) cataloging system, the Subcommittee on the Future of the Catalogs at the University of California, Berkeley (ucb) Library considered methods for dealing with these joint problems of catalog renovation and "desuperimposition"--The lc policy for changing all corporate or personal name entries to conform to the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules. Recognizing that the immediate abandonment of the card catalog was not feasible, the committee formulated three short-range options: (a) to continue the existing author/title catalog with some split files under superimposed and desuperimposed headings; (b) to continue the existing catalog transferring files to new desuperimposed headings; and (c) to start a new catalog. A was rejected, but b and c were further considered in terms of costs, machine-based cataloging, serials, the subject catalog, authority files, and physical space considerations. A majority of the committee recommended option B. Other recommendations were made for immediate actions and for future research. (Sl)
