Poems & translations, 1850-1870 : together with the prose story Hand and soul by Dante Gabriel Rossetti( Book )

20 editions published between 1895 and 1968 in English and held by 52 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

First printed in the short-lived Pre-Raphaelite publication The Germ, Rossetti's early short story "Hand and Soul" tells the fictional story of an early Renaissance painter who is depressed by the failure of his art to improve the world. The painter has a vision that his own soul comes to him in the form of a beautiful woman and instructs him to paint her likeness. In doing so, the painter paints his own soul, by which Rossetti reveals that an artist should produce work which reflects his own emotions and imagination. "Hand and Soul" was chosen by William Morris to be re-printed by his Kelmscott Press, which produced beautiful, hand-printed books. Morris was closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelites and went on to found the Arts and Crafts Movement in Britain.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti by Dante Gabriel Rossetti( Book )

2 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Dante Gabriel Rossetti was the central figure of the Pre-Raphaelites. Together with Hunt and Millais, he started the original Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and was the 'poetic inspiration' of the movement. His turbulent and romantic imagery has always beguiled and intrigued art-lovers." "This beautifully illustrated book, published to accompany the landmark Rossetti exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Walker in Liverpool, is the most thorough and up-to-date analysis of the life and career of this pivotal nineteenth-century English painter available today." "It reproduces all of his most famous works in glorious colour, and major sections are also devoted to Rossetti's subjects from Dante; his representations of artists and their models; his drawings of Elizabeth Siddal; the medievalizing watercolours of the late 1850s; his monumental decorative projects at Llandaff Cathedral and at the Oxford Union; and his contributions to the decorative arts in the form of book bindings and illustrations, stained glass, furniture and picture frames."--Jacket

Volume 10 of 'The Correspondence of Dante Gabriel Rossetti' is the first ever analytical and biographical index to all Rossetti's letters from 1835-82. It gives readers the widest possible contextual access to all names of persons, places, works of art, writings, movements, organizations and activities, both physical and intellectual, mentioned in these letters with their annotations and appendices. But this index, augmenting the partial ones in Vols 2 and 5, is far more than a simple listing of names: it also serves as a subject index, providing mini-precis descriptions of the information detailed in the annotated letter texts. Subheadings within entries depend on the complexity of the subject and may include letters to/from (for recipients) and lists of artistic and literary works by Rossetti's correspondents, or predecessors such as Blake, Keats and Coleridge. It is a concise guide to an entire cultural era. Since Rossetti is the lens through which all other entries are filtered, his own entry is divided into multiple subheadings to facilitate easy access.0The researcher can quickly locate all references to the sonnet sequence The House of Life, the various versions of the Proserpine picture or the complex relationship of his drug use to Rossetti's life and work
