This exciting new book-an entertaining and enlightening blend of hockey stories and leadership lessons-reveals the secrets of hockey's greatest captains by asking questions such as What does it take to lead a team to championship? What are the keys to overcoming unexpected adversity? and How does a captain manage strong egos from diverse backgrounds into a unified, focused team?
Database semantics : semantic issues in multimedia systems : IFIP TC2/WG2.6 Eighth Working Conference on Database Semantics (DS-8), Rotorua, New Zealand, January 4-8,1999 by Robert Meersman( )

7 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 152 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Database Semantics: Semantic Issues in Multimedia Systems reflects the state of the art of emerging research on the meaning of multimedia information, as presented during IFIP's Eighth Data Semantics Working Conference (DS-8), organized by its Working Group 2.6 on Databases, and held at Rotorua, New Zealand, in January 1999. DS-8 was planned as an active forum for researchers and practitioners focusing on those issues that involve the semantics of the information represented, stored, and manipulated by multimedia systems. Depending on the topic and state of research, issues may be covered either deeply theoretically or quite practically, or even both. These proceedings contain twenty-one papers carefully selected by an International Programme Committee and organized in six thematic areas: Video Data Modelling and Use; Image Databases; Applications of Multimedia Systems; Multimedia Modeling in General; Multimedia Information Retrieval; Semantics and Metadata. For almost every area, important topics and issues include: data modeling and query languages for media such as audio, video, and images; methodological aspects of multimedia database design; intelligent multimedia information retrieval; knowledge discovery and data mining in multimedia information; multimedia user interfaces. Three visionary keynote addresses, by famous experts Ramesh Jain, Hermann Maurer and Masao Sakauchi, set the stage for discussion and future directions for the field. The collection of papers that resulted now offers a glimpse of the excitement and enthusiasm from DS-8. Database Semantics: Semantic Issues in Multimedia Systems is suitable as a secondary text for a graduate-level course on database systems, multimedia systems, or information retrieval systems and as a reference for practitioners and researchers in industry
Content-based access to multimedia information : from technology trends to state of the art by Brad Perry( )

3 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 58 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the past five years, the field of electrostatic discharge (ESD) control has under gone some notable changes. Industry standards have multiplied, though not all of these, in our view, are realistic and meaningful. Increasing importance has been ascribed to the Charged Device Model (CDM) versus the Human Body Model (HBM) as a cause of device damage and, presumably, premature (latent) failure. Packaging materials have significantly evolved. Air ionization techniques have improved, and usage has grown. Finally, and importantly, the government has ceased imposing MIL-STD-1686 on all new contracts, leaving companies on their own to formulate an ESD-control policy and write implementing documents. All these changes are dealt with in five new chapters and ten new reprinted papers added to this revised edition of ESD from A to Z. Also, the original chapters have been augmented with new material such as more troubleshooting examples in Chapter 8 and a 20-question multiple-choice test for certifying operators in Chapter 9. More than ever, the book seeks to provide advice, guidance, and practical ex amples, not just a jumble of facts and generalizations. For instance, the added tailored versions of the model specifications for ESD-safe handling and packaging are actually in use at medium-sized corporations and could serve as patterns for many readers

Adding fire to the fuel : challenging shame and the stigma of alcoholism by Scott Stevens( Book )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A not-so-silent thief makes off with $226 billion, every year, robbing the economy, flooding hospitals, clogging courts. Not terrorism. Not obesity. Not cancer or diabetes or Ebola or any other disease. It's alcohol. We'll spend more to combat these other scourges that cause less turmoil and financial damage while alcohol rules the roost, the clubhouse and the corner office. Alcohol stays under the radar because of good advertising and bad stigma. Its purveyors are proclaimed as charitable kings. Those who use it and discover alcohol has health and social consequences, are labeled as villains, kill-joys-, weak, weird, or morally off."--Page 4 of cover

Where Community Is Possible Collaborating on the Margins by Scott Stevens( Book )

1 edition published in 1995 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Two female students worked together collaboratively as a strategy to counter the alienating discursive practices of the classroom. Hopefully, their experience might show that community can serve as a contingent response to situations of exclusion and teach the possibilities of collectivity too long omitted from conceptions of literacy. The link between academic discourse and masculine styles of expression often gets described as a kind of historical accident, when in fact, according to Miriam Brody, the denigration of the feminine and the development of androcentric literacy was a conscious and systematic process. Literacy has developed as individualistic and academic, characterized by a mastery of language, the presumption of objectivity, the use of logic to uncover truth, and writing in a plain, declarative style. The two female students had little interaction during the course, each being randomly assigned to work in different small groups. Their work, however, was not respected in their respective small groups (it was dismissed as "cute little stories"), and this brought them together. In the study they collaborated on, the two students found significance in both the style and content of their writing; they support conclusions about women's complete discursive marginalization made by M. F. Belenky and her colleagues in "Women's Ways of Knowing." Involvement is one of the traits that unites these writers, a certain quality of reading, an affective dimension marked by receptivity. A Multi-View Intelligent Editor for Digital Video Libraries by Brad A Myers( Book )

1 edition published in 2001 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Digital video is becoming increasingly ubiquitous. Most camcorders today are digital, and computers are being advertised based on their video editing capabilities. Many exciting research projects are investigating how to search, visualize, and summarize digital video, but there is little work on new ways to support the use of the video beyond just playing it. In fact, editing video is significantly more difficult than editing textual material. Silver (Simplifying Interactive Layout and Video Editing and Reuse) is an authoring tool that aims to allow novice users to edit digital video. The goal is to make editing of digital video as easy as text editing. Silver provides multiple coordinated views, including project, source, outline, subject, storyboard, textual transcript and timeline views. Selections and edits in any view are synchronized with all other views. A variety of recognition algorithms are applied to the video and audio content and then are used to aid in the editing tasks. The Informedia Digital Library supplies the recognition algorithms and metadata used to support intelligent editing, and Informedia also provides search and a repository. The metadata includes shot boundaries and a time-synchronized transcript, which are used to support intelligent selection and intelligent cut/copy/paste. (Contains 35 references.) (Author/AEF)
