Local Training Evaluation Who's Doing It and What Works? by John F Stevenson( Book )

1 edition published in 1984 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Local evaluations of clinical training programs in psychology are generally conducted from a formative perspective, necessitating careful examination of the training structure, process, and results. To learn about and document the extent of local training evaluation enterprises, two national surveys that solicited general program information, information about the nature and frequency of use of various methods for evaluating training, subjective assessments of evaluation impact, and obstacles to evaluation were mailed to directors of psychology training clinics and to university directors of clinical psychology. The responses (N=87; N=67) indicated that the most frequently used and highest rated source of qualitative evidence of training impact on students was the supervisors' oral evaluations of clinical trainees. The most popular, systematic, qualitative sources of evidence of student performance included supervisors' written evaluations (84 percent) and internship supervisors' reports (84 percent). Some quantitative sources of evidence of student performance used by a minority of respondents included rate of student acceptance to first-choice internships (43 percent), knowledge tests (40 percent), and supervisors' quantitative ratings of students (40 percent). Qualitative means of assessing programs were supervisors' written evaluations and American Psychological Association accreditation reports. Quantitative evidence of program effectiveness included students' course evaluations and ratings of clinical supervisors. The pattern of results attested to the extensive, highly variable nature of current training evaluation activities. Inadequate resources (time, money, personnel) to conduct meaningful evaluation were perceived as the most serious source of difficulty for both clinical and program directors. (NRB)

Evaluating Clinical Training Measurement and Utilization Implications from Three National Studies by John C Norcross( Book )

1 edition published in 1985 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This paper draws on three national studies of professional psychology programs to identify measurement and utilization implications for the evaluation of clinical training. The focus is on the evaluation of the training program rather than the evaluation of students' performance/competence. The directors of 315 programs--74 psychology training clinics, 62 clinical psychology doctoral programs, and 179 predoctoral internships--responded to mailed questionnaires. The questionnaires were designed to: (1) assess the current use of informal and formal training evaluation procedures; (2) gauge the relative impact of these procedures in judging the quality of training; and (3) delineate the major obstacle in conducting this type of evaluation. Aggregate results indicated that evaluation practices heavily favor student-focused, impressionistically-collected, and qualitatively-oriented sources of evidence to judge the training enterprise. Program directors rated written evaluations, formal accreditation reports, trainees' evaluations, and numerical ratings of program effectiveness the most useful measures in gauging the quality of training. Rigor, resistance and resources consistently emerged as the most intractable problems to meaningful evaluation. Findings also indicated considerable convergence in training evaluation designs, measures and obstacles across settings. These marked similarities suggest that site variation is quite limited. Several implications for training evaluation are presented. (Author/PN)
