11 editions published between 1983 and 1999 in English and Undetermined and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume presents seventy-three of American photographer Alfred Stieglitz's finest works. The photographs span Stieglitz's entire career; his early European studies from the 1880s and 1890s; his views of New York City from the turn of the century; the portraits of the many artists and writers he supported; the extended portraiture of Georgia O'Keefe; his photographs of clouds, the Equivalents; and his final studies of New York City and Lake George from the 1920s and 1930s. This book focuses on Stieglitz's central vision of photography ("search for objective truth and pure form") which increasingly was about "antiphotographs" or images that move beyond simple representation. Originally published as a complement to the exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in 1983
Camera work : a pictorial guide, with reproductions of all 559 illustrations and plates, fully indexed by Marianne Fulton Margolis( Book )

4 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Only examples of such work as gives evidence of individuality and artistic worth, regardless of school, or contains some exceptional feature of technical merit, or such as exemplifies some treatment worthy of consideration, will find recognition in these pages." Alfred Stieglitz kept the promise he made in the first issue of Camera Work. The fifty numbers of this famous and lavishly illustrated periodical, which he edited and published between the years 1903 and 1917, contained some of the finest examples of photography and modernist art. The magazine chronicled the introduction of modern European art into America and was a major force in the fight to have photography accepted as a medium of artistic expression. This volume reproduces chronologically all the photographs and other illustrations (except for advertisements) that ever appeared in Camera Work. Marianne Margolis has written an extensive historical introduction about Stieglitz and the magazine, and prepared three complete indexes of the pictures by title, artist and sitter.--From publisher description

Alfred Stieglitz and the American avant-garde by William Innes Homer( Book )

1 edition published in 1977 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the twenty years before World War I, one man almost single-handedly changed the course of American art and photography. That man was Alfred Stieglitz--master photographer, gallery proprietor, publisher, raconteur, philosopher, and critic. This book treats in detail the interaction of Stieglitz and his colleagues, the relationship between European and early American abstract painting, the friendships and travels of the American modernists, the Armory Show and its aftermath, and finally the cultural and social forces that led Stieglitz to close his famous gallery, "291", and to stop publishing his influential magazine, Camera Work
Debating American modernism : Stieglitz, Duchamp, and the New York avant-garde by Debra Bricker Balken( Book )

3 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"From the crossfire between Marcel Duchamp and Alfred Stieglitz and their respective circles there emerged what Debra Bricker Balken calls "a critical reformulation of modernism, one that imprinted the direction of subsequent American art." Balken traces the fascinating threads of the debate between Duchamp and Stieglitz and their respective camps through the 1910s and '20s, and also addresses the sexualized imagery that appears in nearly all of these artists' works, a phenomenon that ironically unifies the two seemingly opposed factions. Jay Bochner provides an absorbing analysis of the artists' respective violations of American expectations about art." "Debating American Modernism includes reproductions of work by artists from both factions, from Arthur Dove, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Paul Strand to Man Ray, Francis Picabia, and Marsden Hartley, as well as by a group who melded the concerns of each, among them, Charles Demuth, Charles Sheeler, John Storrs, and Stuart Davis."--Jacket
