Micio is an aging, easygoing Athenian bachelor whose strict and hardworking brother Demea permits him to adopt and rear Aeschinus, one of Demea's two sons. Unlike his brother, Micio is a permissive parent, choosing to let pass many of Aeschinus's small extravagances on the assumption that children are more likely to remain bound to their duty by ties of kindness than by those of fear. Micio comes to wonder if his policy raising his son Ctesipho is better

Phaedria has been thrown out of his lover Thais's house. And, to add insult to injury, he had paid for his right to be there. He does not know what he should do - he fears losing his place in the pecking order to his rival Thraso - and has only his trusted companion, and slave, Parmeno, for advice. Parmeno, who knows what freedoms can be bought with gold, suggests a gift: a slave girl, and a eunuch. But when Phaedria's brother Chaerea falls in love with another girl (a gift from Thraso hoping to woo Thais), he conspires to have himself substituted for the eunuch, and placed inside Thais's house, causing untold complications for Thais, Phaedria and, not least, himself

"Terence (?184-159 B.C.) was the outstanding comic playwright of his generation at Rome and one of the founding fathers of European comic drama. All six of his plays survive. This new translation with introduction and explanatory notes aims to be both accurate and idiomatic, and to convey the liveliness of the plays as pieces written for the theatre."--Résumé de l'éditeur
