Do financial frictions explain Chinese firms' saving and misallocation? by Yan Bai( )

3 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 27 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We use firm-level data to identify financial frictions in China and explore the extent to which they can explain firms' saving and capital misallocation. We first document the features of the data in terms of firm dynamics and debt financing. State-owned firms have higher leverage and pay much lower interest rates than non-SOEs. Among privately owned firms, smaller firms have lower leverage, face higher interest rates, and operate with a higher marginal product of capital. We then develop a heterogeneous-firm model with two types of financial frictions, default risk, and a fixed cost of issuing loans. Our model generates endogenous borrowing constraints as banks consider the firm's productivity, asset, and debt when providing a loan. Using evidence on the firm size distribution and financing patterns, we estimate the model and find it can explain aggregate firms' saving and investment and around 50 percent of the dispersion in the marginal product of capital within private firms, which translates into a TFP loss as high as 12%

Economic Development, Nutrition Transition and Gender Discrimination in China by Xu Tian( )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since the implementation of the "reform and opening up" policy in 1978, China has been experiencing remarkable economic growth. This economic success can be partly attributed to technological progress, even though no consensus has been reached regarding how much economic growth can be explained by it (Hsieh and Klenow, 2009; Tian and Yu, 2012). Along with this impressive economic development, an increasing number of Chinese families are relieved from hunger and poverty. Accordingly, patterns of food consumption have also been changing dramatically. The traditional Chinese diet, which consis

A time-varying low-dimensional representation for spatio-temporal data by Xu Tian( )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We were motivated by the two major limitations of the current research approaches on the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) based on empirical orthogonal functions (EOF) analysis: (i) long-term stationary assumptions; (ii) lack of measures of uncertainty, and proposed and developed a time-varying low-dimensional representation for spatio-temporal data in this thesis. The low-dimensional representation is based on a structured spatial covariance matrix using a certain number of structured basis functions with certain parametric forms. Initially, we developed the Parametric Basis Function (PBF) spatial covariance model in a stationary scenario and provided the statistical inference in both maximum likelihood and Bayesian analysis frameworks. We further extended the model by introducing time-varying parameters to develop the time-varying parametric basis function (TV-PBF) model in the state space model framework. The Bayesian approach with MCMC techniques was used to make inference for the TV-PBF model. The model is able to provide smoothly changing patterns of the 1st EOFs NAO over time which can serve as an alternative representation for the spatio-temporal NAO data
Applying the payment card approach to estimate the WTP for green food in China by Xu Tian( )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper uses a payment card approach to reveal consumers' willingness to pay for green food in China. We first present a brief introduction of the payment card approach and introduce several methods to estimate the WTP with payment cards, which we subsequently use to estimate WTP values regarding green vegetables, green meat and green eggs in China. Our results indicate that consumers in big cities are willing to pay a higher premium for green food and that WTP values are relatively higher for more expensive food than for cheaper food. In addition, the ratios of premium to price range mainly between 25% and 50% and WTP values obtained from interval midpoint approach are relatively higher than those calculated by other approaches. -- WTP ; Payment card ; Green food
Regime for Bowel Preparation in Patients Scheduled to Colonoscopy: Low-Residue Diet or Clear Liquid Diet? Evidence From Systematic Review With Power Analysis( )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract : Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text Abstract : Abstract: Clear liquid diet (CLD) is used to perform bowel preparation before colonoscopy traditionally, but several clinical studies indicated that low-residue diet (LRD) generates equal effects to CLD and a conclusive conclusion has not yet been yielded. The systematic review was performed to address this conflict and facilitate informed decision-making eventually. To capture randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing LRD with CLD in terms of bowel preparation, a search was performed in PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Science Direct, recent conference abstracts, Google Scholar, and Clinicaltrials.gov through May 2015. We performed all meta-analyses based on fixed- or random-effects model, which is generated from clinical characteristics and methodology. Moreover, the G ∗ Power software was adopted to achieve statistical power for each outcome. In total, we captured 109 potential citations at initial search stage and 2 topic-related articles were included through other sources. After critical appraisal, 7 RCTs were eligible for our inclusion criteria. Meta-analyses generated similar effects in bowel preparation quality, efficacy of colon cleansing, and compliance with recommended dietary regime when LRD versus CLD regime, but patients who were prescribed to receive LRD have slightly better tolerance (RR, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.02–1.11) and tended to repeat the same preparation regime in future (RR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.09–1.26) relative to patients in CLD. Importantly, both regimes resulted in similar adverse events (AEs). With the best available evidence, LRD could be recommended to be as standard regime for bowel preparation prior to colonoscopy
Superior adsorption of 3D nanoporous architectures for Ni(ii) ions adsorption using polyvinyl alcohol as cross-linking agent and adsorption conveyor( )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract : In this study, we report a large-scale and low cost approach for the synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) polyvinyl alcohol/carbon nanotubes nanoporous architecture using self-assembly method. Abstract : In this study, we report a large-scale and low cost approach for the synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) polyvinyl alcohol/carbon nanotubes nanoporous architecture using self-assembly method. Polyvinyl alcohol, serving as a cross-linking agent and adsorption conveyor, could effectively interconnect carbon nanotubes sequentially and also effectively store Ni(ii ) ions. An outstanding adsorption of 225.6 mg g −1 was achieved for 3D nanoporous structure, which was 18-fold more than that for carbon nanotube powders and much higher than that for other sorbents reported in literature. In addition, it was found that 3D nanoporous architectures remained intact after adsorption, which could recollect resources and avoid carbon nanotube leakage into water. Therefore, the designed 3D nanoporous architectures have a good potential application in environmental protection
The Adverse Events of Oxycodone in Cancer-Related Pain( )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract : Abstract: The adverse events (AEs) of oxycodone in cancer-related pain were controversial, so we conducted a meta-analysis to determine it. PubMed, Embase, CBM, CNKI, WanFang database, The Cochrane library, Web of Science, and the reference of included studies were searched to recognize pertinent studies. Relative risk (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for all AEs were all extracted. The fixed-effects model was used to calculate pooled RRs and 95% CIs. Power calculation was performed using macro embedded in SAS software after all syntheses were completed. We identified 11 eligible trials involving 1211 patients: 604 patients included in oxycodone group and 607 patients involved in control group. Our quantitative analysis included 8 AEs, and the pooled analyses indicated that oxycodone compared with other opioids in cancer-related pain were not significantly decreased RRs of all AEs (dizziness RR = 0.94, 95% CI: 0.69–1.30, Z = 0.35, P  = 0.72; nausea RR = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.72–1.07, Z = 1.26, P  = 0.21; vomiting RR = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.70–1.15, Z = 0.9, P  = 0.37; sleepiness RR = 0.86, 95% CI: 0.38–1.36, Z = 0.36, P  = 0.72; constipation RR = 0.98, 95% CI: 0.81–1.19, Z = 0.21, P  = 0.83; anorexia RR = 0.97, 95% CI = 0.58–1.62, Z = 0.11, P  = 0.91; pruritus RR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.44–1.30, Z = 1.01, P  = 0.31; dysuria RR = 0.33, 95% CI: 0.07–1.62, Z = 1.36, P  = 0.1)]. The subgroup analysis shown that Ox controlled-release (CR) had less sleepiness compared with MS-contin (Mc) CR (RR = 0.47, 95% CI: 0.25–0.90, P  = 0.02). The power analysis suggests that all AEs have low statistical power. The present meta-analysis detected that no statistically significant difference were found among oxycodone and other opioids in all AEs, but Ox CR may had less sleepiness compared with Mc CR when subgroup analysis were conducted.
