Some materials exhibit the yield-point phenomenon at first transition from the elastic into the elasto-plastic region. Despite the widespread use of the aforementioned materials, in the past only a few constitutive models were presented which provide a good description of not only the yield-point phenomenon but also czclic plasticity. The paper presents the response of a cyclically loaded console beam. The beam is made of tool steel 42 CrMo 4 in the annealed condition which exhibits the yieldpoint phenomenon. A comparison of experiment and numerical simulation results proves the benefit of taking into account the yield-point phenomenon in constitutive models of cyclic plasticity. Despite the fact that the aforementioned phenomenon occurs only at first transition, it is evident that it has a significant influence on the console beam response in the first and subsequent load cycles

Determination of the low-cycle lifetime of products is often based on a combination of experimental tests and numerical simulations of the stress-strain state and damage, whereby various approaches or numerical models are applied. All models require determination of material parameters, which is usually based on results obtained through cyclic uniaxial tension-compression tests. It is presupposed that the material under observation is homogenous in terms of a representative volume and therefore its response within the measuring range is the same or homogenous at each point. With materials exhibiting the yield-point phenomenon and thereby also non-homogenous plastic strain within the stress (Lüders) plateau, the strain state within the observed measuring range is not homogenous. Despite the fact that the stress plateau occurs only at first transition of the yield point, the authors have discovered that the yield-point phenomenon in uniaxial tests affects the cyclic plasticity of uniaxially loaded specimens and consequently determination of material damage resulting from the low-cycle fatigue. Cyclic plasticity of structural elements made of materials which exhibit the yield-point phenomenon by Andrej Žerovnik( )

At first transition from the elastic into the elasto-plastic region, many materials which structural elements are made from exhibit the yield-point phenomenon. In the event of uniaxial cyclic experiments, the yield-point phenomenon is visible only in the first cycle. However, the authors of this paper have proven that the yield-point phenomenon affects the stress-strain response during the entire lifetime of structural elements which are subject to cyclic plasticity. Taking account of the yield-point phenomenon in constitutive models of cyclic plasticity significantly improves the forecast of the stress-strain response and the lifetime of structural elements. For constitutive models of cyclic plasticity, a description and benefit of the yield-point phenomenon during the development of the stress-strain state of a cyclically loaded structural element are presented by comparing experiment and numerical simulation results. In the paper, the emphasis is placed on detailed determination of the benefit as well as the functionality and necessity of taking account of the yield-point phenomenon in constitutive models of cyclic plasticity
Modeling and experimental validation of the surface residual stresses induced by deep rolling and presetting of a torsion bar( )

During the production of torsion bars, two different mechanical processes of inducing the residual stresses into the torsion bar are used: the presetting of the torsion bar and the deep rolling of the torsion bar. The process of presetting the torsion bar is carried out by twisting the torsion bar to the desired angle and releasing it to the new residual angle position. With controlled overstraining, favorable residual shear stresses are induced into the torsion bar, so the material is strain hardened and the yield point of the material is shifted and increased in the stress and strain space. The objective of the deep rolling process is to introduce compressive residual stresses into near-surface regions in order to increase the fatigue strength of the torsion bar. These two processes influence each other. The final level of residual stresses depends on the production sequence of these two processes and the production parameters of each process. The correct production sequence of these two operations and distribution of beneficial residual stress was simulated using the finite element (FE) method. To validate this model, the predicted surface residual stresses were compared by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements of residual stresses
