Mixed bacterial cultures were enriched from environmental samples for the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 2-(2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxy)propionic acid (MCPP). The rates, efficiencies, and mass balance of herbicide degradation were determined for shake flask cultures as well as in bioreactors. Bacterial degradation of 2,4-D and MCPP was also evaluated in batch and continuous-flow column reactors with granular activated carbon (GAC) as a support matrix. Test cultures were able to degrade 2,4-D completely whereas only partial utilization of MCPP occurred under all experimental conditions tested. Rates of 2,4-D degradation were in the range of 450-630 $\mu$mol/l$\cdot$day in actively growing cultures in shake flasks. The efficiency and rate of MCPP degradation were approximately 96% and 560 $\mu$mol/l$\cdot$day in bioreactors, 90% and 820 $\mu$mol/l$\cdot$day in batch column reactors, and 50% and 140 $\mu$mol/l$\cdot$day in shake flasks, respectively. The efficiency of concurrent degradation of 2,4-D and MCPP in mixed substrate medium was 100% for 2,4-D and 88% MCPP in batch column reactor, and 100% for 2,4-D and 50% for the MCPP enrichment cultures were not capable of growing with MCPP. The isolates were identified as Pseudomonas spp., Alcaligenes spp., Flavobacterium spp., and Achromobacter spp. Glucose proved to be inhibitory to the microbial degradation of 2,4-D. Yeast extract and pH control accelerated the degradation of 2,4-D, but did not have an effect in MCPP utilization. Analytical data (HPLC, UV spectroscopy, GC-MS) showed that 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2-methyl-4-chlorophenol were formed as the respective intermediates of 2,4-D and MCPP degradation. Concurrent degradation of 2,4-D and MCPP was also achieved with the mixed cultures. Test cultures were successfully applied to treat fertilizer waste dust which was contaminated with the two herbicides. The efficiencies of 2,4-D and MCPP degradation in waste dust suspension were 100% and 50% in shake flasks and 100% and 46% in bioreactors, respectively
