Wildlife use of cavity tree clumps in clearcuts by Robert Cameron( Book )

This study was done to examine wildlife use of cavity tree clumps in recent clearcuts in Nova Scotia to help identify whether clumps were used and what vegetative characteristics influence use. Study sites were located in central Nova Scotia, consisting of 26 clearcuts between 2 and 5 years old. Clearcuts ranged in size between approximately 10 and 30 ha. One hundred and thirty-two clumps of trees of varying area, tree species composition, tree size, and juxtaposition within the cuts were selected for study. Clumps had at least ten trees and were no larger than 2 ha

Wildlife use of forested corridors in clearcuts by Robert Cameron( Book )

2 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Strips of forest in a clear-cut connecting two other wooded lands are defined as wildlife travel corridors. This report describes field studies carried out in Nova Scotia to determine the extent of wildlife use of corridors and the vegetative characteristics that influence use. Twenty sites with forested corridors in clear-cuts were selected for study in seven eastern counties. Snow surveys of wildlife tracks were conducted in the corridors between December 1993 and March 1994. Tracking was also done in adjacent clear-cuts and adjacent uncut stands for comparative purposes. Average snow depth, available browse, utilized browse, and vegetative features of the corridors were measured. Correlations are noted between track abundance and such parameters as cover type, riparian versus non-riparian location, tree height, and degree of corridor exposure. Management implications are also noted

Strips of forest within a clear-cut that connect adjacent forested habitat are defined as wildlife travel corridors. The intention in providing corridors in clearcuts is to facilitate animal movement from one forested habitat to another. This document looks at winter wildlife use of forested corridors in clearcuts. Topics covered are: tracks; corridor use by wildlife; corridor characteristics affecting use; professional concerns; management recommendations; and, recommendations for further study
