Log dumping, sorting, and storage in near-shore marine waters can result in a considerable accumulation of wood & bark debris on the sea floor, with consequent effects on benthic habitats. This report describes a side-scan sonar & SCUBA dive study conducted to determine the suitability of those techniques for mapping wood & bark debris fields at four marine log dumps on the north coast of British Columbia. Bathymetric and video surveys were also tested. A variety of operational histories & site locations were used to compare results and develop a better understanding of factors contributing to debris persistence & dispersal for future studies. Suggestions are made for extending the assessments to other locations and for using other hydroacoustic methods such as substrate classification
