Eine Familie in der Nachkriegszeit. Die Webers gehören zum Kleinbürgertum. Den Kampf ums tägliche Brot führt jedes Familienmitglied auf seine Weise. Während der älteste Sohn, Ernst, in einer Maschinenfabrik Geld verdient, widersetzen sich Vater Weber und der jüngere Sohn Harry strikt der Möglichkeit, dort zu arbeiten. Vor allem der Vater hält an den Prinzipien des kapitalistischen Unternehmertums fest und misstraut den neuen Wirtschaftsformen zutiefst. Harry verlässt alsbald das Elternhaus, er will schnelles Geld verdienen. Als er wenig Erfolg mit verschiedenen Tätigkeiten hat, rutscht er ins kriminelle Millieu ab. Derweil wirft Vater Weber seinen strebsamen Sohn Ernst aus der Wohnung, da er mit seiner Arbeit in der Fabrik nicht einverstanden ist. Die Familie droht an den unterschiedlichen Lebensvorstellungen zu zerbrechen, die Eltern erleben in ihrem Haus ohne ihre Söhne die völlige Einsamkeit. Eines Abends wird der Vater Weber auf der Straße von seinem Sohn Harry niedergeschlagen und beraubt. Vater Weber erkennt, dass er seinem Sohn Ernst Unrecht getan hat. Er beginnt eine Arbeit in dem Betrieb, den sein Sohn aufgebaut hat und sein Leben und das der Familie erhält wieder einen Sinn
