"Cette étude porte sur la fusion par contact direct dans les cas où un bloc de matériau à changement de phase (MCP) se trouve en contact avec une plaque plane chauffante fixe ou en mouvement. L'effet de la convection sur le processus de fusion ainsi que l'effet des forces d'inertie sont considérés. Une étude mathématique basée sur une analyse d'ordre de grandeur des équations de conservation est d'abord effectuée. Cette étude permet une planification des études analytiques et expérimentales plus exhaustives effectuées par la suite. Un montage expérimental est conçu et construit afin de mesurer les profils de fusion d'un matériau à changement de phase soumis à diverses conditions de températures et de vitesses de la plaque. Des modèles analytiques et numériques de la fusion par contact direct reposant sur les équations de conservation de masse, d'énergie et de quantité de mouvement sont développés et présentés. Ces modèles sont ensuite confrontés aux résultats expérimentaux en guise de validation. Les résultats démontrent que pour des substances à grands nombres de Prandtl (Pr f>> 1), la convection joue un rôle important en tout temps dans le processus de fusion par contact direct pour Ste = 0,1 en ralentissant la fusion jusqu'à 30%. Contrairement à la convection, l'inertie n'influence pas du tout la fusion. L'effet du mouvement de la plaque commence à se faire sentir pour Re> 10 4 . Trois régimes de fusion sont identifiés : pour Re <3 * 10 5, la fusion par contact direct domine et les temps de fusion diminuent alors d'un maximum de 66%, pour Re> 5 * 10 5, la couche de liquide entre la plaque en mouvement et le MCP devient pratiquement inexistante (d* <8 * 10 -4) et la fusion est dominée par l'abrasion, les temps de fusion augmentent alors radicalement, pour 3 * 10 5 <Re <5 * 10 5, une régime de transition fait le pont entre les régimes de fusion par contact direct et d'abrasion. La dissipation visqueuse peut être ignorée pour Re <10 4 et Ste = 0,001. Pour les substances à faibles nombres de Prandtl (Pr f <<1), les forces d'inertie et la convection jouent toutes deux un rôle dans le processus de fusion. ABSTRACT: This work presents an experimental and numerical study of phase change behaviour in a horizontal cylindrical latent heat energy storage system (LHESS). Fins with two orientations, straight fins and angled fins, are added into the PCM to enhance heat transfer. The PCM used in this study is lauric acid which has desirable thermal properties for LHESS. The experimental work concentrates on studying the heat transfer mechanism during phase change, impacts of the HTF inlet temperature and HTF flow rates. Moreover, heat transfer enhancement effectiveness of straight fins and angles fins is compared. Numerical model is simulated using COMSOL Multiphysics software package. It is observed that conduction is the dominant heat transfer mechanism during the initial stage of charging, and natural convection plays a more important role afterwards. Conduction plays a major role during solidification. Complete melting time is affected by the HTF inlet temperature and HTF flow rates

ABSTRACT: A model is proposed to predict the heat spreading behaviour experienced by laminate materials when heated over only a part of the domain, which is broken up into two regions, known as the heated and fin regions. The 2D, steady-state, two-region fin model is unique in its treatment of multilayer conduction heat transfer, giving the exact solution in the heat-spreading layer only, in both Cartesian and cylindrical coordinates. The experimentally and numerically validated two region fin model can help designers to assess improved heat transfer rates for laminate pouches for use to encapsulate supercooled salt hydrate phase change materials for long-term heat storage. Waste aseptic cartons (e.g. Tetra Brik) are a potentially useful resource for making laminate heat storage pouches since value-added end-uses are largely absent in Canada and in many other countries. The model is also useful for assessing improved temperature uniformity in heat spreading devices with applied heat fluxes

ABSTRACT: Sensible energy storage for solar domestic hot water (SDHW) systems is space consuming and heavy. Latent heat energy storage systems (LHESSs) offer a solution to this problem. However, the functionality of a LHESS during simultaneous charging/discharging, an operating mode encountered when used with a SDHW, had not been studied experimentally. A small scale vertical cylindrical LHESS, with dodecanoic acid as the phase change material (PCM), was studied during separate and simultaneous charging/discharging. Natural convection was found to have a strong influence during melting, but not during solidification. During simultaneous operation heat transfer was limited by the high thermal resistance of the solid PCM. However, when the PCM was melted, direct heat transfer occurred between the hot and cold heat transfer fluids, indicating the significance of the PCM phase on heat transfer in the system. The results of this research will lead to more optimally designed LHESS for use with SDHW.?

ABSTRACT: This thesis presents an experimental apparatus and methodology for measuring the interface conductance of thermal interface materials (TIMs) as a function of clamping pressure. The experimental apparatus is a steady state characterization device based on the basic premise presented in ASTM D5470 - 06. The setup is designed to develop an approximately one dimensional heat transfer through a TIM sample which is held between two meter bars. The temperature is measured along the meter bars using resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) and the temperature drop across the interface is extrapolated from these measurements and then used to calculate the conductance of the interface. This setup and methodology was used to characterize six commercial TIMs at pressures ranging from 0.17-2.76 MPa (25-400 psi). These TIMs included: Tgrease 880, Tflex 720, Tmate 2905c, Tpcm HP105, Cho-Therm 1671, and Cho-Therm T500. The measured conductance values for the various tests ranged from 0.19 to 5.7 W/cm2K. A three dimensional FEA model of the experimental setup was created in COMSOL Multiphysics 4.2a. This model was compared to the experimental data for a single data point and showed good correlation with the measured temperatures and conductance value

Interconnected energy flow analysis and heat recovery strategy of the Michelin Bridgewater Manufacturing Facility by Trevor Jamieson( )

ABSTRACT: This study presents the analysis of the heating and cooling systems in the Michelin Bridgewater production facility and the investigation of the interconnected effects of the heating systems. The Michelin facility has been operational for over 30 years, and does not have an in-depth understanding of how production is affected by changes in steam production. The steam production system has been modeled along with the cooling water systems. Each of the thermal energy sources and sinks has been represented in order to gain more understanding of what type of interconnection there are between processes. The amount of steam supplied to each process was calculated using simulations. Actual plant data for the total water usage and steam production were used in the model, along with measurements collected experimentally. In order to obtain simulated results that reflected the actual plant data, three individual models were created for the winter, summer and fall seasons. The simulation offers a better understanding of how the individual production areas are connected and how changing individual operational parameters affects the other systems in the facility. The simulations could be used to test operational changes, and predict what effects there will be on the heating and cooling systems, without the risk of losing production during testing. In addition to the overall plant simulation, an initial study was performed on the feasibility and potential cost savings of using the domestic hot water system as a potential heat sink. The results of this study suggest that there would be a saving of $16,513 per year of Bunker C fuel. This would be in addition to the reduced emissions from burning less fuel in order to heat the domestic hot water
