Passive damping to enhance active positioning of a prototype lithography platen( Book )

1 edition published in 1994 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

A viscoelastic tuned-mass damper was used to suppress specific structural modes of a prototype lithography platen. The platen is magnetically levitated and it is repositioned and held in position by a closed-loop feedback control system. Important capabilities of the platen control system are precise positioning and rapid repositioning, which tend to require high frequency bandwidth. The high bandwidth excites structural vibration modes which are disruptive to the control system. The present work was to develop and demonstrate a means to suppress these modes using passive vibration damping techniques. The motivation is to increase the robustness of the platen positioning and control system by reducing unwanted modal accelerations excited by high control system bandwidth. Activities performed and discussed in this paper include the analytical design of viscoelastic tuned-mass dampers and the demonstration/testing of their effectiveness on the platen while levitated and controlled

Propeller Slipstream Performance for Four High-Speed Rudders Under Cavitating Conditions( Book )

1 edition published in 1974 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

A series of rudders with a geometric aspect ratio of 1.5 but widely varying section shapes was constructed to determine the effect of section shape on the cavitating performance of high-speed rudders. Experiments on four of these rudders operating behind a propeller were conducted in the 24-inch, variable-pressure water tunnel over a cavitation number range from 4.0 to 0.5 and an angle of attack range from -35 to +35 degrees. The propeller ahead of the rudder was operated at propeller loadings of 0.07, 0.15, and 0.20. (Modified author abstract)
Preliminary Propulsion Performance Estimates for an 80-Knot Hydrofoil Craft( Book )

1 edition published in 1975 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

It is shown that a controllable-pitch propeller can be selected which will meet the takeoff and the maximum speed thrust ratio of 4.5 at 35 knots. It is recommended that auxiliary propulsion devices be investigated to facilitate hydrofoil takeoff
Propeller RPM Investigation for a Large Hydrofoil Craft( Book )

1 edition published in 1975 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

A preliminary investigation of subcavitating, transcavitating, and supercavitating propellers was undertaken to determine the best reduction gear ratio for an 1100-ton hydrofoil. The results of this investigation indicate that a suitable pair of subcavitating, transcavitating, or supercavitating propellers can be designed for this craft if the propeller RPM lies between 550 and 700 RPM. Using one LM 2500 gas turbine engine per propeller and a 5:1 reduction between the turbine output and the propeller, a range of RPM's between 550 and 700 can be achieved by verying the maximum turbine RPM selected for the turbine at the full-power condition of 21,400 SHP. A propeller can be designed for the craft which will absorb this power anywhere between 550 and 700 propeller RPM
