Les sincères L'épreuve by Pierre Carlet de Chamblain de Marivaux( Visual )

1 edition published in 2004 in French and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Videorecording of a theatrical production of two plays by Marivaux. In Les sincères, a marquise prides herself on her sincerity and lack of flirtatiousness. Her maid does her best to make her mistress look elegant, only to be rebuked on the grounds that vanity is a woman's worst fault. The maid stops attending to the appearance of the marquise, who then loses her cheerful disposition and becomes mean-spirited. The maid resumes her first practice, and the marquise's serenity and cheerfulness return. In L'epreuve, a wealthy bourgeois wants to be sure that he is loved for himself rather than for his money. In both plays, under the critical gaze of their servants, the masters invent dangerous games to escape the rules of the 18th century where nobility, power, and money are entwined

La locandiera by Carlo Goldoni( Visual )

1 edition published in 2006 in French and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Mirandolina is in this play not only obviously the protagonist but she is also the teacher, reflecting publicly about her ways and giving us in the end of the play her judgement about her wickedness and her skeemish behaviour. The main theme within this play is the Cavaliereâ#x80;#x99;s misogynism and Mirandolinaâ#x80;#x99;s determination to change this state of being and humiliate his individuality. She challenges the cavaliere with her business-like manner, coquettish behaviour and sensuality whilst rejecting other menâ#x80;#x99;s advances. Her mannerism and savoir-faire enthrals the suspecting victim who falls into the web of deceit. He manages to finally liberate himself towards the end of the play when in desperation he flees out of the locandaâ#x80;Œ presumably to brew over the boils of his burnt feelings! The cause of all this pain is of course jealousy! Mirandolinaâ#x80;#x99;s punishment allows for the de-noument of the events towards a happy conclusion. She decided to marry her waiter Fabrizio, the older faithful employee, the man who was signalled by her father as the suitable suitor for his not so young daughter and future innkeeper. A marriage of convenience and totally acceptable socially within the custom and expectations of times. Writer Galdoni knew how to be a diplomat when it was required. Thatâ#x80;#x99;s the mark of a man who knew the ways of the world."--CONTAINER
