Promising practices increasing and supporting participation for Aboriginal students in Ontario
(
Book
)
3 editions published in 2010 in French and English and held by 11 libraries worldwide This paper is the result of a review of over 40 programs in Ontario colleges and universities that were designed to increase recruitment, participation and retention of Aboriginal students in postsecondary education. It involved a literature review, site visits to 6 postsecondary institutions and qualitative interviews with program administrators and coordinators at 28 institutions in Ontario. The researchers found that significant progress has been made in developing support programs for Aboriginal students. It's noted in the paper that almost all colleges and universities in Ontario now have some form of support program and many institutions have taken a holistic approach and have implemented a number of programs targeting different underlying causes of lower participation and retention among Aboriginal students. Progress is noted in the area of Aboriginal management bodies which are in place to help inform the design and implementation of Aboriginal-focused programs. Aboriginal Elders are being consulted and are playing a more active role on college and university campuses. As well, the number of courses being offered in the native languages of Ontario's First Nations Peoples has increased, and the number of Aboriginal teachers available to teach and serve as role models has also increased. As the name suggests, the report also provides a broad snapshot of promising practices aimed at increasing Aboriginal recruitment and retention.

Faculty engagement in teaching development activities, phase 1 literature review
by Frederick T. (Frederick Thomas) Evers
(
Book
)
3 editions published in 2009 in English and French and held by 11 libraries worldwide University faculty are expected to engage in teaching, research and service to their university and profession. The proportions of these activities vary by institution and discipline, but all faculty work within some combination of these three areas. It should be noted that during a faculty member's career, he or she may work almost entirely as a researcher for a certain period of time, especially if sponsored by a provincial or federal funding program, but will then often return to a focus on teaching once the research project is completed. An example of this would be a large research project funded by one of the three federal granting councils (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council [NSERC], Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council [SSHRC] or Canadian Institutes of Health Research [CIHR]). Faculty generally learn how to do research in their respective fields of study through their graduate - and in some cases post-doctoral - programs. They learn how to serve the academic community on-the-job, however, and most also learn how to teach on-the-job. Very few university faculty ever go to teachers' colleges or their equivalent, as is required for most K-12 teachers. Some take teaching courses and programs as part of their graduate experience.

3 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in English and French and held by 10 libraries worldwide Postsecondary educational attainment is important for both the individual and society. A dilemma postsecondary educational institutions and provincial governments often face is how best to price the cost of attending a postsecondary educational institution. On the one hand, it has generally been shown that students with a postsecondary education earn more than those with no postsecondary education. But, on the other hand, it is believed that economic growth hinges on having a well educated society. The former argument leads one to argue for the student paying for tuition while the latter argues for subsidized tuition.
(
Book
)
Emotional intelligence interventions to increase student success
by Barbara Bond
(
Book
)
Aboriginal self-identification and student data in Ontario's postsecondary system challenges and opportunities
by Stephanie Oldford
(
Book
)
3 editions published in 2011 in French and English and held by 9 libraries worldwide The Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO) commissioned a study to help the provincial government determine the best way to collect data on Aboriginal PSE students. Canada's Aboriginal peoples are historically under-represented in PSE, although the population is proportionately younger and growing at a faster rate than the non-Aboriginal population. Augmenting existing methods of data collection, such as the province's Multi-Year Accountability Agreement reports, the study suggests additional approaches and offers some cautionary notes on how data are collected and used. Conducted by the Canadian Council on Learning, this resource was based on a literature review, an analysis of current practices in Ontario and elsewhere, and an on-line survey of relevant staff at Ontario colleges and universities.
