Three letters received by Miss Hazel Hunt in La Crosse, Wis. from two friends in the Army describing their training experiences near the end of World War I. One letter is from Pvt. Leo G. Walkert writing from Camp Upton, N.Y. where he was training with the Machine Gun Co. of the 341st Infantry (171st Infantry Brigade). Walkert describes camp conditions and a trip to Coney Island. The other letters are from Pvt. Samuel W. Johnson writing first from the Sweeney Auto School in Kansas City, Mo. and then from Camp Hancock, Georgia where he is a member of the 14th Provisional Co. Johnson's letters describe training exercises, food, sleeping quarters, contain gossip about friends at home, and mention the threat of Spanish influenza.
