Cognitive determinants of role playing by O. J Harvey( Book )

3 editions published in 1963 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ten representatives of each of the four major levels of concreteness- abstractness posited by Harvey, Hunt and Schroder (1961) were required to argue in opposition to their own belief concerning whether or not philosophy should be required as a minor for all college undergraduates. Subjects presented their arguments under either a private condition, in which they were erroneously assured no one would ever know the arguments they presented, or under a public condition, in which they were advised that their tape-recorded arguments would later be heard by a university curriculum committee. In addition to the This I Believe Test, scored for abstractness in two ways, each of the 80 Ss was also administered Rokeach's (1960) scales of dogmatism and opinionation as well as the F Scale, Gough and SANFORD'S Rigidity Scale (1952), the Doodlebug Problem (Denny, 1945) and the WAIS intelligence test. Subjects' tape-recorded arguments were scored on 18 variables of role playing

Some cognitive and affective determinants of differentiation and integration by O. J Harvey( Book )

2 editions published between 1963 and 1964 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Eleven representatives of 4 principal conceptual systems ranging in abstractness from rather concrete to almost completely abstract, were tested on their differentiation and integration of 3 cognitive domains (people, institutions, and inanimate objects) toward which they were highly positive, highly negative and neutral. The representatives were selected by means of the TIB (This I Believe) Test. Differentiation and integration were assessed in the domains of people and intitutions to test an assumption that these areas are differentially relevant to representatives of the 4 conceptual systems and should be differentiated and integrared differently by them. The third domain of inanimate objects were selected because of their assumed low relevance to all 4 of the conceptual systems, making this domain an appropriate control against which to compare the effects of positive and negative involvement. The F for conceptual systems was not significant for eigher differentiation or integration. The nature of the attitude toward the objects significantly affected both differentiation and integration; neutrally regarded objects were differentiated and integrated significantly better than positively regarded objects. Variation in cognitive domains had no significant effect on either differentiation or integration. (Author)

Conceptual determinants of influencibility by O. J Harvey( Book )

2 editions published in 1963 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Individuals varying in conceptual makeup were subjected to a series of experimental manipulations calculated to elicit different responses from the varyingly constituted participants. More specifically, representatives of the four nodal conceptual systems posited by Harvey, Hunt and Schroder (1961) were exposed to experimental variations that were expected to "pull" differential yielding to or reliance upon external cues and social influence. According to the theory of Harvey, et al., representatives of these four conceptual systems vary not only in terms of concreteness-abstractness, as a function of the developmental stage they have attained, but they also vary in terms of the cues or guide lines on which they tend to rely in cognizing and reacting to given classes of stimulus events or situations
