Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss ( Recording )
134 editions published between 1957 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 2,257 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Strauss's poignant fairy tale of 18th-century Vienna is brilliantly realized by a glittering cast under the musical direction of the great Karl Böhm, a friend and protégé of the composer. Vienna's own Leonie Rysanek is the beautiful and wise Marschallin, the woman who knows her affair with the impetuous Octavian (a superb Christa Ludwig) will not last forever. The enchanting Reri Grist sings Sophie, the girl who captures the young man's heart. Water Berry is appropriately loveable and boorish as Sophie's would-be fiancé, the rustic Baron Ochs, who becomes the victim of Octavian's elaborate joke. Nicolai Gedda is luxuriously cast as the Italian Singer

Wagner's drama of overwhelming love and devastating loss has seldom been so vividly brought to life as with this all-star cast of great singing actors. The electrifying combination of Jon Vickers and Leonie Rysanek, as twins who fall in love, is legendary. Birgit Nilsson, the defining Brünnhilde of her generation, gives one of her most touching performances as the daughter of a god who cannot withstand the power of human love. With the great Christa Ludwig as Fricka, and Thomas Stewart's gripping portrayal of Wotan, the unraveling god, this is not to be missed

Two sisters whose fiancés have gone off to war (or so they pretend), a clever maid, a cynical old philosopher, and those same two fiancés in disguise--six characters is all it takes for Mozart and his librettist, Lorenzo Da Ponte, to explore both the fun and the heartbreak that love can lead to in this equally lighthearted and deeply human comedy. James Levine masterfully leads a stellar cast that includes Carol Vaness and Tatiana Troyanos as the sisters, Jerry Hadley and Thomas Hampson as their fiancés, Betsy Norden as Despina, and Richard Van Allen as Don Alfonso
St Matthew Passion : BWV. 244 by Johann Sebastian Bach ( Recording )
28 editions published between 1962 and 2001 in 3 languages and held by 645 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Although Bach wrote four (or five) settings of the Passions only two have survived; the St. Matthew Passion (Matthäus-Passion) and the St John Passion. The St. Matthew Passion was probably first performed on Good Friday (11 April) 1727 in the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, where Bach was the Kantor of the School and Directoris Chori musici of Leipzig. He revised it by 1736, performing it again on 30 March 1736, this time including two organs in the instrumentation. He further revised and performed it again on 24 March 1742. Considered to be one of the greatest pieces of sacred music in Western music, it has been recorded many times, and this version, recorded in July 1964 has remained one of the reference recordings of the work, not least for the inclusion of Fritz Wunderlich as performer of the tenor arias, as well as the rest of the supreme vocal cast which includes Pears, Prey, Ameling and Krause. Booklet notes are by the producer of this recording, the great Ray Minshull, and full texts, together with a new English translation are included
